وَثِقتَyou were certain بِأَنَّthat قَلبيmy heart مِنof حَديدٍiron
وَثِقتَ بِأَنَّ قَلبي مِن حَديدٍ
وَفيهِand in it عَلىagainst الهَوىlove بَأسٌstrength شَديدُfierce
وَفيهِ عَلى الهَوى بَأسٌ شَديدُ
You were certain that my heart was made of iron,
You trusted that my heart was made of steel,
and within it lay fierce strength against love.
And that it fiercely resisted love's appeal.
فَلانَso it softened عَلىto هَواكَyour love وَلاand not عَجيبٌsurprising
فَلانَ عَلى هَواكَ وَلا عَجيبٌ
إِذاwhen داوُدُDavid لانَsoftened لَهُfor him الحَديدُthe iron
إِذا داوُدُ لانَ لَهُ الحَديدُ
So it softened to your love—and no wonder,
Yet no wonder you succumbed to passion's tide,
when iron softened for David.
For iron itself to David would yield.
