لاقَيتَناyou met us مَلقىthe welcome of الكَريمِthe generous man لِضَيفِهِfor his guest
لاقَيتَنا مَلقى الكَريمِ لِضَيفِهِ
وَضَمَمتَناand you embraced us ضَمَّthe clasping of الكَميِّthe armored warrior لِسَيفِهِof his sword
وَضَمَمتَنا ضَمَّ الكَميِّ لِسَيفِهِ
You welcomed us as a generous man welcomes his guest,
You met us like the generous man meets his guest
and embraced us as an armored warrior clasps his sword.
And embraced us like the brave man embraces his sword
وَجَعَلتَand you made رَبعَكَyour dwelling لِلمُؤَمِّلِfor the hopeful كَعبَةًa Kaaba
وَجَعَلتَ رَبعَكَ لِلمُؤَمِّلِ كَعبَةً
هِيَit رِحلَةٌa journey لِشِتائِهِfor his winter وَلِصَيفِهِand for his summer
هِيَ رِحلَةٌ لِشِتائِهِ وَلِصَيفِهِ
And you made your dwelling a Kaaba for the hopeful,
You made your abode a Ka'aba for the hopeful
a destination for his winter and summer journeys.
It is a journey for his winter and his summer
ياO مَنone who إِذاwhen اِشتَبَهَbecame unclear الصَوابُthe right course أَعارَهُhe lent it
يا مَن إِذا اِشتَبَهَ الصَوابُ أَعارَهُ
رَأياًa judgment يُخَلِّصُseparates نَقدَهُits genuine coin مِنfrom زَيفِهِits counterfeit coin
رَأياً يُخَلِّصُ نَقدَهُ مِن زَيفِهِ
O one who, when the right course is unclear, lends it
O you who when truth is confused lends it
a judgment that separates its genuine coin from its counterfeit.
An opinion that refines its weight from falsehood
وَإِذاand when غَزاhe invades أَرضَthe land of العَدوِّthe enemy فَوَحشُهاthen its wild beasts
وَإِذا غَزا أَرضَ العَدوِّ فَوَحشُها
مِنamong وَفدِهِhis visiting delegation وَنُسورُهاand its vultures مِنamong ضَيفِهِhis guests
مِن وَفدِهِ وَنُسورُها مِن ضَيفِهِ
And when he invades the enemy's land, its wild beasts
And when the enemy's land is raided and desolated
are among his visitors, and its vultures among his guests.
By his delegation and its eagles from his guest
هَطَلَتpoured rain عَلىupon العافينَthose seeking bounty مِنكَfrom you سَحائِبٌclouds
هَطَلَت عَلى العافينَ مِنكَ سَحائِبٌ
يُغنيenriches الوَليُّthe follow-up rain وَليَّهاtheir beneficiary عَنbeyond need of صَيفِهِhis summer rain
يُغني الوَليُّ وَليَّها عَن صَيفِهِ
Clouds from you have poured rain upon those seeking bounty;
Upon the prosperous from you poured clouds
their follow-up showers spare their beneficiary the need for summer rain.
That enrich the guardian for his charge over summer
وَسَماحُand the generosity غَيرِكَof anyone but you خَطرَةٌa fleeting impulse لِوَساوِسٍof idle fancies
وَسَماحُ غَيرِكَ خَطرَةٌ لِوَساوِسٍ
فَكَأَنَّهاso, as though it فيin النَومِsleep زَورَةُa visit طَيفِهِhis phantom
فَكَأَنَّها في النَومِ زَورَةُ طَيفِهِ
And anyone else's generosity is a fleeting impulse of idle fancies,
While others' generosity is a whim to suspicions
so it is like a visit from his phantom in sleep.
As if in sleep the phantom of its specter
كَمmany a مُجرِمٍoffender قَضَتِdecreed الذُنوبُthe sins بِحَتفِهِhis death
كَم مُجرِمٍ قَضَتِ الذُنوبُ بِحَتفِهِ
فَغَداand so he began يَعَضُّbiting بَنانَهُhis fingertips مِنbecause of حَيفِهِhis wrongdoing
فَغَدا يَعَضُّ بَنانَهُ مِن حَيفِهِ
How many an offender, whose sins had decreed his death,
How many criminals whose sins decided their demise
and who had begun biting his fingertips over his wrongdoing,
Who gnaw their fingers in the morning from remorse
أَمَّنتَهُyou made him safe مِنfrom خَوفِهِhis fear فَكَأَنَّهُso, as though he
أَمَّنتَهُ مِن خَوفِهِ فَكَأَنَّهُ
قَدalready حَلَّhe alighted فيin الإِحرامِpilgrim consecration مَسجِدَthe mosque of خَيفِهِhis Khayf
قَد حَلَّ في الإِحرامِ مَسجِدَ خَيفِهِ
have you made safe from his fear, as though he
You gave him safety from his fear as if he
had alighted in pilgrim consecration at his Mosque of Khayf!
Has entered the inviolable sanctum of his dread
