عَزَمتَyou resolved ياO مُتلِفيmy destroyer عَلىon السَفَرِtravel
واطولَalas, how long خَوفيmy fear عَلَيكَfor you واحَذَريalas, my dread
You have resolved, O my destroyer, to depart.
You were determined, my companion, to travel
Oh, how long my fear for you—oh, my dread!
And my greatest fear is for you, so beware
يُؤيِسُنيmakes me despair مِنof لِقاكَmeeting you قَولُهُمُtheir saying
بِأَنَّهُthat it is the case لاno رُجوعَreturn لِلقَمَرِfor the moon
Their saying makes me despair of meeting you:
What they say makes me despair of seeing you again
That there is no return for the moon.
That the moon never returns
تَمَهَّلgo gently مُضنىwasted جَفاكyour coldness
تَحَمَّلbe forbearing ذُبتُI have melted فيin هَواكlove for you
Go gently; I am wasted by your coldness.
Be gentle with me, though you've abandoned me
Bear with me; I have melted in love for you.
Endure, I'm consumed with passion for you
ياO مَنyou who حَكىresembled الظَبيَthe gazelle فيin تَلَفُّتِهِits turning glance
وَفاقَهُand surpassed it بِالدَلالِin coyness وَالخَفَرِand bashfulness
O you who resembled the gazelle in its turning glance,
O you who told of the gazelle in her turning
And surpassed it in coyness and bashfulness,
And surpassed her in charm and grace
أَتَلفتَنيyou destroyed me بِالصُدودِby turning away مُعتَدِياًunjustly
فَذَلَّso was humbled عِزّيmy pride وَعَزَّand became difficult مُصطَبَريmy endurance
You destroyed me by turning away, unjustly;
You've wearied me with your distance, transgressing
So my pride was humbled, and patience eluded me.
So my glory is humbled but my patience exalted
تَدَلَّلbe coy مُهجَتيmy lifeblood فِداكa ransom for you
تَسَهَّلrelent بَعضُa little ذاthis كَفاكhas sufficed you
Be coy; my lifeblood is a ransom for you.
My love begs for you
Relent; a little of this is enough for you.
Some of that palm of yours would appease me
وَدَّعتَنيyou bade me farewell وَالدُموعُwhile the tears سائِحَةٌstreaming
لَوif عَرَضَتthey had appeared لِلمَطِيَّbefore the riding camels لَمwould not تَسِرِmove on
You bade me farewell while the tears streamed;
And you left while tears flowed
Had they appeared before the riding camels, the camels would not have moved.
If they'd been shown to the rider, he wouldn't have departed
وَخاطِريand my spirit بِالفُراقِby parting مُنكَسِرٌbroken
وَلاعِجُand the blaze الوَجدِof longing غَيرُnot مُنكَسِرِbroken
And my spirit is broken by parting,
And my heart is broken by the separation
Yet the blaze of longing is unbroken.
While the agony of passion leaves it not shattered
مُبَلبَلdistraught أَرتَجيI hope for لِقاكmeeting you
أُعَلَّلI am consoled أَنَّنيthat I أَراكI will see you
Distraught, I hope to meet you;
I'm confused, I hope to see you
I am consoled by the hope that I will see you.
I'm crippled, believing I'll look upon you
عَلَيكَupon you جِسمٌa body كَالماءِlike water رِقَّتُهُits delicacy
يَضُمُّit encloses قَلباًa heart قُدَّhewn مِنfrom حَجَرِstone
You have a body as delicate as water,
You've a body soft as water
Enclosing a heart hewn from stone.
Containing a heart made of stone
وَطَلعَةٌand a face كَالهِلالِlike the crescent moon مُشرِقَةٌradiant
تُزهىshines proudly عَلىupon غُصنِthe branch قَدِّكَof your stature النَضِرِverdant
And a face radiant as the crescent moon,
And a face like the crescent moon shining
Shining proudly upon the verdant branch of your stature.
Adorning that delicate branch of your neck
إِذاwhen أَقبَلhe approaches يَخجَلُis abashed الأَراكthe arak tree
وَيَذبُلand it withers عِندَماwhen يَراكit sees you
When he approaches, the arak tree is abashed,
When he comes near, he is bashful
And withers whenever it sees you.
And withers when he sees you
إِنif قيلَit is said قَدalready رُمتَyou have sought فيin الهَوىlove بَدَلاًa replacement
فَاِنظُرthen look فَليسَfor it is not العِيانُdirect sight كَالخَبَرِlike hearsay
If it is said, 'You have sought another in love,'
If they say you've been infatuated with another
Then look, for seeing is not like hearsay.
Look, for reports are not like eyewitnessing
فَتِّشsearch فُؤاديmy heart فَأَنتَfor you ساكِنُهُits inhabitant
فَليسَfor there is not فيهِin it سِواكَother than you مِنany بَشَرِhuman being
Search my heart, for you are its inhabitant;
Search my heart, for you dwell there
For there is no human being in it but you.
Within it none but you of mortals exist
تَأَمَّلconsider هَلwhether بِهِin it سِواكother than you
لِيُقفَلso it may be locked مُقتَضىthe dictates of رِضاكyour pleasure
Consider whether anyone but you is in it,
See if it contains any but you
So it may be locked as your pleasure requires.
To fulfill the requirement of your satisfaction
كَأَنَّas though نارَthe fire الجَحيمِof Hell هَجرُكَyour abandonment ليof me
لَمdid not تُبقِleave مِنof مُهجَتيmy lifeblood وَلَمand did not تَذرِspare
It is as though the fire of Hell were your abandonment of me:
As if the fires of hell deserted me because of you
It has left nothing of my lifeblood, and spared nothing.
Leaving none of my love behind or sparing it
إِنif كانَis أَقصىthe utmost of مُناكَyour wishes سَفكَshedding دَميmy blood
فَليسَthen there is not عِنديwith me لِذاكَfor that مِنany أَثَرِtrace
If your utmost wish is to shed my blood,
If your utmost against me is to shed my blood
Then I have not a trace of it left for that.
To me there is in that no trace
أَيَحمِلdoes he bear? حَتفاًdoom مَنone who رَجاكhopes in you
وَيُقتَلand is killed وَهوَwhile he is فيin حِماكyour protection
Does one who hopes in you bear his doom,
Can one who hoped in you bear destruction
And is he slain while under your protection?
And be killed while under your protection?
ياO قَلبِmy heart قَدindeed كانَhas happened ماwhat بُليتَyou were afflicted بِهِwith it
فَاِصبِرso be patient لِحُكمِunder the decree of القَضاءِfate وَالقَدَرِand destiny
O my heart, what afflicted you has come to pass;
O heart, what you've suffered was fate and destiny
So be patient under the decree of fate and destiny.
So be patient with the judgment of divine decree
فَالصَبرُfor patience كَالصَبرِlike aloes فيin مَرارَتِهِits bitterness
لَكِنَّbut فيهِin it عَواقِبَthe outcomes الظَفَرِof victory
For patience is like aloes in its bitterness,
For patience in the bitterness of adversity
But within it lie the fruits of victory.
Holds within it the fruits of victory
تَحَمَّلendure فيin الهَوىlove أَذاكyour pain
نُدَلَّلwe are indulged كَيso that نَرىwe may see مُناكyour wishes
Endure the pain you suffer in love.
Endure the passion for him
We are indulged so that we may see your wishes fulfilled.
We'll be indulged that we may look upon him
