ليfor me بِرَبعِهِمat their dwelling أَرَبُa desire
Where in the protected grounds are the Arabs
Where are the Arabs in the abodes of love?
whose dwelling I long for?
Would that I had a quarter of their passion!
كُلَّماwhenever ذَكَرتُهُمُI remember them
حَزَّنيcut into me لَهُمfor them طَرَبُlonging
Whenever I remember them,
Whenever I remember them,
longing for them cuts into me.
I am saddened by their fervor.

Neighbors in whose encampment
They are neighbors in their quarters
family honor is not upheld.
Whose nobility cannot be preserved.

قُend of 'rights' عِندَهُمُamong them تُغتَصَبُare violated
Pledges and rights
Promises and pacts with them
are violated among them.
Are seized and breached.

بِالصِفاحِbehind the swords مُحتَجِبُveiled
In their tents is a moon,
In their tents, a moon
veiled behind swords.
Veiled in the drinking-cups.

His saliva is aged wine;
Her saliva is wine;
his teeth are its bubbles.
Her mouth is desire itself.

وَالفُؤادُand the heart مُكتَئِبُdejected
I spent the night in their dwellings,
I pine in their lands
while my heart was dejected.
While my heart is downcast.

Tears were pouring down,
Tears flow
and my ribs were aflame.
And ribs grow hot.
إِنَّindeed لِلغَرامِfor passion يَداًa hand
مَسَّنيtouched me بِهاwith it العَطَبُruin
Indeed, passion has a hand
Love's hand has surely
with which ruin has touched me.
Struck me with passion.
إِنif قَضَيتُI die فيهِin it أَسىًsorrow
فَهوَthen it is بَعضُpart ماwhat يَجِبُis due
If I die in it from sorrow,
If I suffer sorrow there,
then that is part of what is due.
It's part of love's duty.

The tale-bearers showed contentment
The slanderers feigned pleasure
from which anger is discerned.
But anger showed through.

Faces are laughing,
Faces laughed
while hearts are sobbing.
While hearts cried within.
لَوif أَتواthey came بِمَكرُمَةٍwith a noble deed
أَعتَبواthey appeased وَماand not عَتَبواthey reproached
If they had done a noble deed,
Had they brought a gift,
they would have appeased me, not reproached me.
They'd protest it wasn't enough.

عَذلُهُمtheir reproach لَهاfor it حَطَبُfirewood
For passion is a blazing fire;
For love is a blazing fire
their reproach is its firewood.
And their rebuke its fuel.
