Were it not for love, he would not have melted from his longing—

A lovesick man afflicted by the springs of his eye.

Enslaved by love, he cannot be found by his visitors

Except by the moaning they hear.

He now fears the gazelle in its hiding place,

And does not fear the lion in its den.

Sound judgment apologizes to his waywardness,

And reason studies under his madness.

O neighbors of the encampment, give a lover refuge,

Who has not strayed from love's law and creed.

His inward self is lovelier than his outward form,

And his doubt is clearer than his certainty.

Do not take what flowed over his cheek

For tears pouring from his eyelids.

Rather, the ice of his heart has melted,

So his eye seeps with water from its wellspring.
