Was it from a blast of the Trumpet, or a fragrant breath from the palms,

That you, O wind, revived a dead man unburied?

Or from the fragrance of Paradise's breeze, when it passed

Across a dew-damp place showered with blossoms?

Or from Rashmal's garden, whose fragrant breath infused

The breeze's folds with perfume spread within them?

The wind has let out the slack of its reins there,

And the branch moves between advance and retreat.

In a garden whose branches stand upright,

The east wind's train is now raised, now trailing.

The water is now diverted, now restrained,

And the shade is now stretched, now shortened.

The wind flows gently over its pool,

And its water is free in a captive's guise.

Its banks have been joined in a 'sound' gathering,

While its water gathers in a 'broken' gathering.

The wind traces a net upon its waves,

And the clouds draw pictures of every kind.

    فَزَهرُهُ بَينَ مُنغَضٍّ وَمَزرورِ

    The tender narcissus has not lowered its eyes;

Its blossoms are now drooping, now buttoned shut.

It is like gold atop columns

Of emerald, amid petals of camphor.

The daisies shine there among the yellow blossoms,

    Like dirhams among dinars.

We yielded to youthful dalliance when we were aided

By youth's season with no meager generosity.

Indeed, youth is an intercessor; its cloak's fragrance

Comes from Darin's perfume, not Fansur's perfume.

The company's piper folds us up and unfolds us

By blowing into the flute, not by blowing the Trumpet.

A singer sang melodiously, his voice full of song,

As though speaking from a blackbird's throat.

A singer whose fingertips win people's pleasure for him,

When he sings and the sea answers with the treble string.

With a high-nosed instrument standing upon a foot,

Lamenting passion with an abandoned lover's breaths.

Its tongues tightened upon the upper arm through a change of lettering,

So it yielded more pearls, for a secret locked within it.

When the singer tucks it beneath his arm and reminds it

Of youth's season with the tips of his nails,

Its innards and ribs complain to the companions

Of the scissors' snipping or the saws' sawing.

While you see his cheek above a neck,

Like someone consulting it on wise management,

You see him violently disturb it and anger it

By striking its strings with a wronged man's rancor.

And the dancers, their tresses leaning

Over waists like the middles of wasps:

The robe hides their slender frailty from us, but it is exposed

By the sashes' knots and the wasps' tight bindings.

When they bend, their flanks drawn to and fro

By a swaying, rain-drenched mound among the dunes,

You see waves of rounded hips collide

In the depths of a sea enchanted with beauty's water.

Each sways her flanks in merriment,

    Divided between femininity and masculinity.

As though, amid the ebony, her right hand, when it strikes,

Were dawn in which the heart of darkness trembled.

She keeps the rhythmic measures with her hands and feet,

And preserves the underlying pattern from loss or alteration.

She frees the dance from error, applying to it

What grammar undergoes of omission and implied supplementation.

The cupbearer is calm-eyed and slender-waisted,

Sober of glance, yet bending with a drunkard's sway.

As though the All-Merciful had fashioned him as a reminder

For anyone who doubts the heavenly youths and houris.

His cheeks complain of injustice, though they are unjust,

And his gaze enchants in the guise of one enchanted.

He circulates wine whose ember dilution kindles,

Doing nothing but making its blaze fiercer.

A fire appeared to passion's Moses, who glimpsed it

From the side of the cup, not the side of Mount Tur.

It sparkled in the cupbearers' hands, and

Its glasses blazed through its subtle influence.

As though, while the cup's radiance veils it,

It were a soul of fire in a body of light.

The pitchers stammer when the wine is mixed,

Like a frightened speaker stumbling over his words.

As though, while pouring into the cups, they were

Birds feeding their young with their beaks.

The wine began seeking from us vengeance for its father

And his trampling beneath the pressers' feet.

    When no mind remained unimprisoned

By wine, and no understanding unwounded,

I let my glances roam among the companions: how often they saw

A lion rolled in the dust by a gazelle's glances!

From every eye, with its successor's likeness above it,

Downcast, yet possessed of unbroken deadliness.

I say, while the wine has shown its bubbles

And the cup sputters into it like a chest-sick man:

    وَهَل يُتَوَّجُ يا قوتٌ بِبَلّورِ

    You have spoiled its adornment, O mixer of cups;

Can a ruby be crowned with crystal?

And someone, seeing the lofty gardens,

The houris secluded within their chambers,

The solitary pavilion in the lake's depths, and the

Palace smoothly faced there with glass,

Asked, 'Whose is the kingdom after God's?' I answered him

With the words of one whose hopes are expansive and glad:

'The lord of the crown and lofty palace, who

Has brought justice spread across the spacious earth.'

He said, 'You mean Kisra?' I answered him:

'Kisra son of Artuq, not Kisra son of Sabur.'

Al-Salih, the king whose bounty earns thanks—

Yet many an acquirer of kingship goes unthanked.

A king who, when people lavish praise upon him,

Ends the day with wealth his hands have not hoarded.

His countenance is beloved by everyone,

Like a flame in the eyes of someone chilled.

    وَالبَحرُ ما بَينَ مَرجُوٍّ وَمَحذورِ

    He is hoped for and feared on days of bounty and death;

The sea, too, is both hoped for and feared.

A sun whose countenance transforms the sunlight,

As though the sun had been swiftly folded up by him.

The sun has no boast except that it is a title

Of his, and resembles him in glory and light.

If he intends generosity, his resolves do not consider

Whether to advance his deed or put it off.

Before the gift he meets you smiling, beginning

With open warmth, and after his gifts with apologies.

    وَليسَ كُلُّ زِنادٍ في الدُجى يوري

    The sons of Artuq saw through him the path of right guidance;

Not every flint kindles fire in the dark.

His judgment set their royal counsels right,

As though they had obtained an elixir from him.

How many a band, once the evil of dissension appeared within it,

Perished by the drawn sword of his resolve!

They hastened to war, their heads bowed in prostration,

And the bright blades between 'No god but God' and 'God is greatest.'

They walked like sandgrouse, until, when they bore

The weight of chains, they walked like sparrows.

O giver of horses on the day they command high prices,

None of their efforts have gone unthanked.

If Kisra's pride was in thousands, how many

Numbers with a thousand as their root have you bestowed!

Or if al-Nu'man vaunted a pavilion, how many

Inhabited pavilions are yours at al-Shi'bayn!

    In every rugged-sided, inaccessible stronghold,

Bridges are built with hundredweights of treasure.

Had 'Ad son of Shaddad passed through his garden,

He would have stayed there, gnashing his teeth in disillusion.

No wonder you are generous to visiting parties, bound

For you, rolling up the wastelands like scrolls.

If they hasten toward you from Syria's farthest reaches, they have

Hastened from Tyre to al-Malik al-Mansur.

Rejoice in a feast through which joy has returned to us,

While your hater has returned to grief and gloom.

Your fasting has deafened your enemies' ears; and how many

A heart of theirs have you broken by breaking your fast!

I call upon you with the call of a servant devoted to you:

O peerless one of the age, listen—not as one commanded.

    لَيسَ المُحِبُّ عَلى بُعدٍ بِمَعذورِ

    I claim no excuse for delaying my visit to you;

A lover is not excused for remaining far away.

Rather, if my long absence from your presence has become

My great sin, then this praise is my atonement.

But for you, I would have no desire for poetry,

Nor would I have brought it forth from my heart's store.

A virtue whose increase has diminished my standing,

Like a noun increased by a ya to make it diminutive.

Yet I have not debased its treasures out of greed,

Like one who cheapens poetry in praise of Ibn Mansur.

My soul's dignity stands above its means

In gold, and my worth exceeds my allotted lot.

But my age has held me back and brought forward those

Who came before me in the ancient tales.

As though I were an Indian numeral: what has granted me

My high place is my being pushed so far back.

Unveil, then, this virgin poem, whose dowry is nothing

But acceptance and affection not denied.

It can boast over Abu al-Tayyib of Kufa,

For I did not waste its musk on anyone like Kafur.

It grew tender to declare my bondage to your glory,

Out of love, and grew long to erase the sin of my shortcomings.
