    لَمّا دَعَوتَ فَأَبطَأوا

    They were few at your side, and so they erred;

when you summoned them, they were slow.

    فَحينَ صُلتَ تَبَرَّأوا

    And they volunteered until you charged;

then, when you charged, they disclaimed involvement.

They feared punishment, so they made preparations,

    and readied themselves for flight.

Leave them: not all the strong

are kept in reserve for hardships.

So you will surely hear what befalls

    whoever hates your glory.

So face the enemies with a countenance

    from which eyes recoil, abashed.

For at your side are young men from among us

who never desist from their vengeance.

They sought refuge with you, all together,

and refuge is sought in shade like yours.

And they hoped for your approval,

and guarded themselves against anything else.

And they grew alert, as though

they had prophesied about you through augury.

    O spreading tree, all humankind

    rests in its shade.

You are nothing but a whole

of which the noble are parts.

If you charge, we shall leave the enemies

caught unawares in every mountain pass.

And they will gulp down death's choking pangs

because of what they dared undertake.

    وِ فَبِالأَقارِبِ يُدرَأُ

    So, with us, beat back the enemy's breast;

for through kinsmen he is repelled.

    Indeed, roots, however far

back their origins lie, never fail.

And win fair remembrance, for it

    is sweeter than spoils.

For a man is granted what he wishes

    from Time, and suffers loss.
