رَقَصواthey danced فَقامَso arose الحَربُwar وَاِشتَبَكَand clashed القَناthe spears
مِنfrom كُلِّevery قَدٍّfigure كَالقَضيبِlike a slender branch إِذاwhen اِنثَنىit bent
They danced; war broke out, and the spears clashed,
They danced, so war arose and spears intertwined
From every figure like a branch when it bends.
From every firm bow when bent
وَنَضَواand they unsheathed مِنَfrom السودِthe dark eyes المِراضِlanguid صَوارِماًkeen swords
بيضاًwhite فَلَمso did not نَعلَمwe know عَلَيناagainst us أَمor لَناfor us
And from dark, languid eyes they unsheathed keen swords,
They drew from the black scabbards gleaming swords
White; we knew not whether they were against us or for us.
White, so we knew not against us or for us
هَزّواthey shook الغُصونَthe branches وَكَلَّفواand they burdened أَعطافَهُمtheir flanks
حَملَbearing الجِبالِthe mountains فَكانَso it was ظُلماًan injustice بَيِّناmanifest
They shook the branches and burdened their flanks
They shook the boughs and shouldered their burdens
With bearing mountains—a manifest injustice—
Bearing mountains, so it was clear injustice
مِنfrom كُلِّevery رِدفٍrump كَالكَثيبِlike a sand dune مُجاذِبٍtugging against
قَدّاًa figure أَغَضَّmore tender مِنَthan القَضيبِa slender branch وَأَليَناand more supple
From every dune-like rump tugging against
From every saddle like the humped sand dune contention
A figure more tender than a branch, and more supple.
With firmer, softer thrust than spear
صَدّواthey turned away وَرَدّواand they turned back سافِرينَunveiled وُجوهَهُمtheir faces
نَحويtoward me فَشاهَدتُso I beheld المَنِيَّةَdeath وَالمُنىand desires
They turned away, then turned their unveiled faces
They repelled and returned, their faces traveling
Toward me, so I beheld death and desire.
Towards me, so I saw death and attainment
ضَمِنواthey guaranteed قِرىhospitality أَسماعِناour ears وَعُيونِناand our eyes
لِلعَينِfor the eye رَقصُهُمُtheir dancing وَلِلسَمعِand for hearing الغِناsinging
They promised a feast for our ears and eyes:
They guaranteed for our hearing and eyes
For the eye, their dancing; for the ear, their singing.
For the eye their dancing, for the ear their singing
