The vicissitudes of the nights keep no lasting covenant.

And the hands of death cannot be repelled.

They make peace with us inadvertently and assault us deliberately.

Their aid is oppression, and their deathblow is intentional.

I marvel at whoever is beguiled by them into hoping for a paradise

of life, when they hold neither peace nor coolness.

Do calamities launch a raid every day,

for which the neckline is torn or the cheek is slapped [probable reading]?

    فَما بالُ فَقدِ الإِلفِ لَيسَ لَهُ فَقدُ

    I see the loss of every cherished companion hastened;

why, then, is the loss of a friend never itself lost?

I lost men whose courage in distress

was my back, my arm's reach, my hand, and my forearm.

The night of calamities, when it darkened, increased their

radiance; one opposite reveals the beauty of the other.

I see everyone who wins gratitude after them

among people as a neck unworthy of a necklace.

For that I forsook familiar company, knowing that I

am the sword for you, unworn even if the sheath wears out.

And I visited lands whose soil makes honor grow,

where a pact succeeds among the sons of their households.

For fear I might reach morning bereft of a friend,

alone, and reach evening beside someone with nothing to offer.

And when I turned the pale camels at a journey's end

toward a haunt of mine, where I had old ties with my beloved,

and neared the landmarks of al-Tawilah, recalling

the days of youth, while gray hair had not yet appeared,

I asked the precincts of al-Fayha why their dwelling place

was barren, though once its freshness was plain to see.

And why their water had not quenched the thirst

of a thirsty man, nor a fire-stick sparked for anyone seeking them.

    وَصَوَّحَ نَبتُ العِزِّ وَاِنهَدَمَ المَجدُ

    It said: He who decreed good fortune for me has died;

the growth of honor has withered, and glory has collapsed.

So Majd al-Din now lies in the dust,

and free-flowing generosity and the sturdy man are gone.

A young man whose soul taught him the utmost renunciation,

until he came to renounce even life itself.

Before him, I had never seen a full moon possessed by the earth,

nor before him a sea enfolded by the grave.

Scion of the Chosen One's intimate, and son of his grandson,

indeed, his mother, father, and grandfather were noble [probable reading].

Eloquent: when the most obstinate adversary's

proofs became known, he had unyielding arguments.

Whenever he spoke, his deed preceded his word,

so he never had either a threat or a promise.

If the hands of death erred in striking him,

by my father's life, this was deliberate error.

    لَهُ الشُكرُ دِرعٌ وَالعَفافُ لَهُ بُردُ

    He departed pure in his garments, his body, and his heart;

gratitude was his armor, and chastity his cloak.

He left us, from his fragrance, the fragrance of his children,

to take his place, as the rose leaves us its water.

They are the people who spoke eloquently, exalted,

and the reaches of their glory grew gray while they were beardless.

If one of them settled in a tribe,

he would be pointed out: he is the peerless banner.

It is glory enough for them that he is their father,

and enough for him that he has children among them.

O distant one whom sweet remembrance brings near,

in his distance there is nearness, and in his nearness distance.

God be with you! How many heights of glory you attained

that the tawny lion shrank from reaching.

When peoples one day boast of their glory,

you belong to a people in whom glory itself takes pride.

Their youngster grew accustomed to the backs of poised steeds,

until saddle and cradle were alike to him.

For the hosts of courage, around their houses they guarded

a wealth of glory defended by the army and the troops [wording uncertain].

Houses of armored warriors, before which spears are shattered,

and forests of lions, before which lions are torn apart.

They dwelt while life's coolness was a blaze to them,

and charged while the heat of assault was coolness to them.

And they grew mighty until the nights' stars made peace with them,

so every star in their dwelling was auspicious.

    فَأَنتَ إِذاً نِدَّ الكِرامِ لَهُم نِدُّ

    You inherited their eminence and took their virtue as your model;

thus you, O peer of the noble, are their equal.

If a maiden's bosom and breast entice some men,

you long for the council's foremost seat and the mighty steed.

It is against my will that the earth should hide you,

and that the delegation should return, repulsed and disappointed,

and that you should turn away from answering a petitioner,

when refusal had never known anyone who asked you.

I shall mourn you with all the strength I can, setting in verse

your elegy; this is the effort of one who has no strength.

If the lids of my eye grow sore with weeping,

how often through you were our inflamed eyes made clear!

Though you have now been hidden from us,

remembrance, gratitude, and praise have taken your place.

One who is far away is not absent while his essence is present,

nor has one vanished who is unseen while his traces appear.
