شَمسُthe sun النَهارِof day بِحُسنِby the beauty of وَجهِكَyour face تُقسِمُswears
إِنَّindeed المَلاحَةloveliness مِنfrom جَمالِكَyour beauty تُقسَمُis apportioned
The sun of day swears by the beauty of your face:
The sun in your beautiful face swears
Indeed, loveliness is apportioned from your beauty.
That all beauty comes from your perfection.
جُمِعَتwere gathered لِبَهجَتِكَfor your splendor المَحاسِنُcharms كُلُّهاall of them
وَالحُسنُand beauty فيamong كُلِّall الأَنامِhumankind مُقَسَّمُis divided
All charms were gathered for your splendor,
All charms are gathered for your delight,
While beauty is divided among all humankind.
While loveliness itself is allotted among all mankind.
ياO مَنyou whose حَكَتresembled عَيناهُhis two eyes سَيفَthe sword of سَمِيِّهِhis namesake
هَلّاwhy not اِقتَدَيتَyou emulated بَعَدلِهِin his justice إِذwhen يَحكُمُhe judges
O you whose eyes resemble your namesake’s sword,
O you whose eyes inscribed the sword of his glance,
Why not emulate his justice when he judges?
Why not adopt his justice when you judge?
أَنتَyou المُرادُthe one desired وَسَيفُand the sword of لِحظِكَyour glance قاتِليmy slayer
لَكِنbut فَميmy mouth عَنfrom شَرحِexplaining حاليmy plight مُلجَمُbridled
You are the one I desire, and the sword of your glance is my slayer,
You are the desired one, and the sword of your glance is my executioner,
But my mouth is bridled, unable to explain my plight.
Yet my mouth is muted from explaining my state.
تَشكوyou complain of تَفَرُّقَناour separation وَأَنتَyet you جَنَيتَهُyou caused it
وَمِنَand among العَجائِبِthe marvels ظالِمٌa wrongdoer يَتَظَلَّمُcomplains of injustice
You complain of our separation, though you caused it,
You complain of our separation though you caused it,
And among the marvels is a wrongdoer complaining of injustice.
And it is amazing for an oppressor to protest.
وَتَقولُand you say أَنتَyou بِعُذرِof the excuse for بُعديmy staying away عالِمٌaware
وَاللَهُand God يَعلَمُknows أَنَّنيthat I لاdo not أَعلَمُknow
And you say, “You know my excuse for staying away.”
You claim knowing my excuse for being distant,
And God knows that I do not know.
Yet God knows I know not.
فَتُراكَso, I wonder, do you تَدريknow أَنَّthat حُبَّكَlove for you مُتلِفيis destroying me
لَكِنَّنيbut I أُخفيhide هَواكَlove for you وَأَكتِمُand keep it secret
Do you then, I wonder, know that my love for you is destroying me?
I see you know my love for you,
But I hide my love for you and keep it secret.
Yet I conceal my passion and remain silent.
إِنif كُنتَyou are ماnot تَدريaware فَتِلكَthen that مُصيبَةٌa calamity
أَوor كُنتَyou are تَدريaware فَالمُصيبَةُthen the calamity أَعظَمُgreater
If you do not know, that is a calamity;
If you know not, that is a calamity,
Or if you know, the calamity is greater.
If you do know, the calamity is greater.
