يَ لِمَدٍّ قَضى لِوَصلي بِجَزرِ
The sea barred me from seeking my lord,
The sea hindered me from reaching my beloved,
For a rising tide decreed an ebb for my reunion.
Who stayed in Jazir for some days, as ordained.

تُI (completes كنت) جَسوراًbold عَلىin العُبورِcrossing بِجِسرِby a bridge
تُ جَسوراً عَلى العُبورِ بِجِسرِ
So I refused to board a ship, nor was
So I refused to board a ship, for I have never
I bold enough to cross by a bridge.
Been daring enough to cross a bridge of iron.

أَنا غَمرٌ إِذا نُبِذتُ بِغَمرِ
When crossing bridges, I am not bold;
When bridges are destroyed, I do not dare cross;
I am a novice if cast into deep water.
Rather, I am a flood if cast into a flood.

كانَ رِزقي فيما وَراءَ النَهرِ
I would not accept dominion over the Persians if ever
I am not pleased to rule Persia if my daily bread
My livelihood lay beyond the river.
Lies beyond the river that I cannot cross.
