The lily has unfurled his banners,

And said, “All the flowers are in my service.

Were I not their sovereign in beauty,

My banner would not have been raised in preference to theirs.”

Then the rose laughed aloud at him in mockery,

And said, “Do you not fear my might?”

And said to the iris, “What is it that

The gray-haired one says in my presence?”

And the lily took offense at his words,

And said to the flowers, “O my band!”
