دَبَّcrept العِذارُthe cheek-down فَقامَتِand so arose الأَعذارُthe excuses
وَبَداand appeared السَوادُthe blackness فَزادَتِand so increased الأَنوارُthe lights
The cheek-down crept in, and excuses arose.
The excuses arose, so the justifications stood
And blackness appeared, and the lights grew brighter.
And the darkness appeared, so the lights increased
لاno بِدعَwonder إِنif زادَincreased الظَلامُthe darkness ضِياءَهُhis radiance
إِذfor فيin الحَنادِسِthe pitch-dark nights تُشرِقُshine الأَقمارُthe moons
No wonder if darkness increases his radiance,
It is inevitable that when the darkness increases its illumination
for in pitch-dark nights the moons shine.
The moons shine among the stars
لَوif لَمnot تَلُحappear شَعَراتُهُhis hairs فيon خَدِّهِhis cheek
لَمnot تَحلُbe sweet ليto me فيin وَصفِهِdescribing him الأَشعارُthe verses
Had his hairs not appeared upon his cheek,
If his moles did not shine on his cheek
verses describing him would not have been sweet to me.
Poetry would not be permissible for me in describing him
يَبدوappears الظَلامُthe darkness عَلىupon ضِياهُhis radiance كَأَنَّهُas though he were
قَمَرٌa moon لَهُfor him ذَيلُthe trailing hem السَحابِthe clouds خِمارُa veil
Darkness appears upon his radiance, as though he were
Darkness over its illumination appears as though
a moon whose veil is the clouds' trailing hem.
It is a moon with the veil of clouds as its train
