Tell the wealthy man who has slept through my sleeplessness,

And him in whose eyes my body and condition are sick:

You sleep, heedless of me, while the star's eye stays awake.

Ah, my burning heart, for one whose heart is icy!

For love lies where foes and lions crouch.

If only we shared in proportion to love!

Will you then help with a folly I have resolved upon?

Within its folds is sorrow; within its folds are blessings.

Love of safety bends its possessor's resolve.

When light and darkness are alike to him.

If you incline toward it, then make yourself a tunnel.

Regret will surely come to those I bade farewell.

The abject man's contentment with life's ease brings him low.

And I have looked upon him while the swords were blood.

Indeed, glory spoke to me, and she was truthful:

Indeed, ties of acquaintance among the wise are obligations.

I called out to fortune—if only I had called to a listener!

And my words made the deaf hear.

Perhaps he, if my merit and their deficiency become clear—

I reached it on a steed whose back is a sanctuary.

I console my soul with hopes I pursue.

If only your situation were close to ours!

My knowledge of its worth set a high price on my soul.

Until I struck, while death's waves crashed together.

I would not have chosen to live on into an age

In which gray falcons and vultures are equal.

Your worst enemy is the closest of those you have trusted.

So never think that the lion is smiling.

And your good opinion of the days is a weakness.

To suppose there is fat in one whose fat is swelling.

If anything can help them remain steadfast,

Then a wound is painless if it pleases you.

O you who come to drink the dregs of a life whose clarity is murk,

And the worst a person earns is what disgraces him.

Why, then, do you cross the sea's depths, riding upon it?

And God and nobility abhor what you do.

And O knowledgeable one, well aware of secrets,

The dispute concerns you, and you are both adversary and judge.

They have nominated you for a task—if only you understood it—

In it, India's white swords and locks of hair shook hands.

So heed the quoted phrase about you, which I deem

To have been filled with pearls, though it is made of words.
