1. يا سَمِيَّ الَّذي بِهِ اِتُّهِمَ الذِئ

    بُ وَأَفضى إِلَيهِ مُلكُ العَزيزِ

    O namesake of him on whose account the wolf was accused,

    and to whom al-Aziz's dominion passed.

  2. لَو تَقَدَّمتَ مَع سَمِيِّكَ لَم يُم

    سِ فَريداً في حُسنِهِ المَنبوزِ

    Had you lived earlier alongside your namesake, he would not have been

    unrivaled in the beauty for which he was known.

  3. حُزتَ أَضعافَ حُسنِهِ وَتَمَيَّز

    تَ عَليهِ بِكُلِّ مَعنىً مَحوزِ

    You possess many times his beauty and have surpassed

    him in every quality you have attained.

  4. أَنتَ حُرُّ الأَديمِ لَم تُشرَ في الرِق

    قِ بِنَزرِ اللُجَينِ وَالإِبريزِ

    You are noble of skin, never sold into slavery

    for a pittance of silver and pure gold.

  5. تَتَمَنّى العُشّاقُ لَو كُنتَ تُشرى

    بِنُفوسٍ نَفيسَةٍ وَكُنوزِ

    Lovers wish you could be bought

    with precious souls and treasures.

  6. لا وَمَن زانَ وَردَ خَدِّكَ بِالخا

    لِ وَزانَ العُيونَ بِالتَلويزِ

    No—by Him who adorned the rose of your cheek with a mole,

    and adorned the eyes with their almond shape—

  7. ما تَغَيَّرتُ عَن هَواكَ ولا رُم

    تُ سِوى ذَلِكَ الجَمالِ العَزيزِ

    I have not turned from loving you, nor have I sought

    anything but that precious beauty.

  8. كُلَّما هَزَّكَ الصِبا هَزَّني الشَو

    قُ إِلى ضَمِّ قَدِّكَ المَهزوزِ

    Whenever youth sways you, longing stirs me

    to embrace your swaying form.

  9. غَيرَ أَنّي أَبيتُ نَصباً عَلى الهَم

    مِ بِحالٍ يُغني عَنِ التَمييزِ

    Yet I spend the night weary with sorrow,

    in a state that makes discernment needless.

  10. أَتَوَقّى الأَعداءَ إِن رُمتُ ذِكرا

    كَ فَأَكني عَنِ اِسمِكَ المَرموزِ

    I guard against enemies when I wish to mention

    you, so I allude to your name in code.

  11. فَأُناجي بِكُلِّ مَعنىً دَقيقٍ

    وَأُناجي بِكُلِّ لَفظٍ وَجيزِ

    So I whisper with every subtle meaning,

    and whisper with every concise expression.
