O bearer of the burnished, adorned sword,

unsheathe your glance and cast aside your arms.

    You have, O lord of

    murderous eyes,

    what spares you bearing a

    sword and slender spear:

    eyes before which lie bare

    the body's vital spots.

Whenever coquetry stole through their lids,

they laid our hearts low with wounds.

And a gazelle from among the

    Turks, dark-lipped,

    his cheek, at a word—not a

    glance—bleeds.

He routed the army of night when

    he came visiting.

His cheeks shone as the wine was unveiled,

so I mistook my evening draught for a morning one.

He visited me when night had

    spread its train.

Then his face showed us the

    sun at night.

Whenever he was swayed by the

    wine,

and his face appeared and shone forth,

it turned the pitch-black night to morning.

And a reprover spent the night

    warning me away from him,

when he saw me wary of the harm of

    speech.

I said, 'Speak! I am risking my

    soul.'

He said, 'Stop! Do not disobey me.' I said, 'Easy—

I fear no disgrace in loving him.'

    Many a night he spent

    in loving union,

    صُبحِ ناصِل

    while night's dye, with the

    dawn, was fading;

then he gave me his saliva to drink, while the

    cup came round.

He said, 'Shall I fill the cup with wine, or not?'

I said, 'Your sweet saliva is wine enough for me.'

He said to me in reproach, while the

    night was still,

and my hand was drawing him toward

    my pillow:

'You have come between me and

    my sleep,

making your right hand an anklet round my leg

and your left hand a sash around my waist.'

And a young woman had been intimate with

    him and leaned close,

    seeking to kiss him

    as she was leaving.

Then he turned away from her in

    aversion, so she said:

    'For a night's stay, you won't spare a kiss?

May we never lack this generosity of yours!'
