غَدَت وَهيَ قاعٌ في الوَقائِعِ صَفصَفُ
Mountains are blown away by the winds of death;
Mountains blown away by the winds of mortality
They have become a bare, level plain on the battlefields.
Have become a wasteland amidst the events that unfold
مَحَتهاeffaced them رِياحٌwinds لِمَنونِof doom عَواصِفٌtempestuous

عَلى أَنَها لا تُتَّقى حينَ تَعصِفُ
The tempestuous winds of doom effaced them,
Winds of fate erased them
Though they cannot be warded off when they rage.
Though they could not be avoided when raging
أَفيis there in كُلِّevery يَومٍday لِلمَنِيَّةِfor death غارَةٌa raid

Does death mount a raid each day,
Does death raid everyday
Raiding the flock of souls and snatching them away?
To snatch away a flock of souls
كَأَنَّas though حِبالَthe ropes of الساحِرينَthe sorcerers نُفوسُناour souls

وَتِلكَ عَصا موسى لَها تَتَلَقَّفُ
Our souls are like the sorcerers' ropes,
As if our souls are ropes of sorcerers
And death is Moses's staff, swallowing them up.
And that is Moses' staff seizing them

It raided the chieftains of the house of Sinbis,
It raided the heavy ones of the House of Sinbis
So its caprice began to work its will among them.
So that plundering them became its habit

Men—were the lions' lairs to inspire fear,
Men, if the lion feared their abodes
I would fear for the lions at those men's hands.
I would fear it because of them

Suns whose eclipse in the dust death showed us;
Suns whose light death has obscured in the soil
And I never thought the sun could be eclipsed in dust.
Yet I never thought the sun could be eclipsed in soil

It came upon them, and no sword-stroke repelled it,
It came upon them but no sword blow could deflect it
Nor did closely woven Sabiri mail avail against it.
Nor could the armored warrior push it back

No steed gallops between its ears despite the spear
Adorned with earrings and pendants of their spearheads;
Protruding from its flank that it shakes off

Nor did the army quake from its surging waves

Its striking edges streaming with blood in battle's terror;
Thrashing in fright, blood dripping from its blade

Known for his skill in combat, determination supports him
The resolve of a gallant man more skilled in striking than the sword.
I know of his prowess in striking with blows

Behold, a noble man has fallen in glory's cause,
Indeed, in the path of glory, is the death place of the valiant
From whose hands the fruits of hopes are plucked.
Fruits of hopes are plucked by his hands

When an adversary sought the utmost in disparaging him,
When an opponent desires to denounce him
He contrived at last to say, 'He is excessive in generosity.'
He claims generosity while being wasteful

The heart of lightning broke on the day of his loss;
The heart of lightning cracked the day it was struck
Do you not see it throbbing when it flashes?
Can you not see it fluttering when snatched away

The full moon of perfection never stopped blaming its loss
Over his loss, until it grew dark-spotted.
Until it exceeded limits in lament
فَياso, O هالِكاًfallen one قَدindeed أَطمَعَemboldened الخَطبَcalamity هُلكُهُhis death

وَكانَand was بِهِby him طَرفُthe eye of النَوائِبِmisfortunes يُطرَفُstruck in the eye
وَكانَ بِهِ طَرفُ النَوائِبِ يُطرَفُ
So, O fallen one, whose death has emboldened calamity,
So perish O one whom misfortune made greedy of ruin
Whereas once he struck misfortunes in the eye.
And the turns of fate toyed with him

You were indeed a protective fortress in which we took refuge,
You were a fortress, with you we took refuge
For fear of foes; and today we swear by your name.
Wary of enemies, and today by your name we swear

For if, in the days of your life, you were a Kaaba
If in your lifetime you were like the Ka’ba
Where refuge was sought—today your memory is a Qur'an.
Taken refuge in, then today your mention is the holy book
فَبَعدَكَso after you لاnot شَملُthe collected store of اللُهىgifts مُتَفَرِّقٌdispersed

So after you, no store of gifts is scattered
After you neither are associations of inspiration united
Through generosity, nor are the ranks of glory united.
By generosity, nor are bonds of elevation harmonized

I shall mourn you for the honor in which you clothed me,
I will weep for you with the honor that you adorned me
And in which I used to move freely among humankind.
And which I used to comport myself amongst all people

And I shall drain my blood in grief, not my tears;
And I will bleed my blood not my tears in sorrow
And what blood have you left in me to bleed away?
What blood remains in me that can still bleed

May God water the earth that embraced your body with a downpour,
May God water the soil that hides your body with rain
Whose coolness adorns a meadow and patterns it with stripes;
That moistens the garden and makes it lush

If decay's hands make its grounds unrecognizable,
If the hands of time do not recognize its beds
It will reveal its precincts and make them known.
It will flourish over its sides and make it known
