لاmay … not بَلَغَattain الحاسِدُthe envier ماwhat تَمَنّىhe wished for
فَقَدfor indeed قَضىhe perished وَجداًof anguish وَماتَand died مَنّاof exhaustion
May the envier never attain what he wished for.
The envier has not attained what he wished
For he has perished of anguish and died of exhaustion.
He has perished, filled with rancour and spite
وَلاand may … not أَراهُshow him اللَهُGod ماwhat يَرومُهُhe seeks it
فيناconcerning us وَلاand may … not بُلِّغَbe reported سوءٌany ill عَنّاabout us
And may God not show him what he seeks
I do not think Allah will let him achieve
Concerning us, nor may any ill be reported about us.
His evil desires against us, not at all
أَرادَhe intended يَرميto cast discord بَينَناbetween us لِبَينِناfor our separation
فَجاءَso he came فيin القَولِspeech بِماwith what أَرَدناwe desired
He sought to sow discord between us, to part us.
He wanted to sow dissension amongst us
Yet his words brought what we desired.
But he came with words of our own wanting
أَبلَغَكُمhe informed you أَنّيthat I جَحَدتُI disavowed حُبِّكُمyour love
أَصابَhe got right فيin اللَفظِthe wording وَأَخطاand got wrong المَعنىthe meaning
He told you that I had disavowed your love.
He told you I had disavowed your love
He got the wording right, but the meaning wrong.
Correct in wording, but wrong in meaning
ظَنَّhe thought حَبيبيmy beloved راضِياًpleased بِسَعيِهِwith his efforts
فَشَنَّso he launched غاراتِraids of الأَذىharm وَسَنّاand poured forth
He thought my beloved pleased with his efforts.
My darling thought his efforts had pleased me
So he launched raids of harm and poured them forth.
So he launched attacks to injure and hurt
فَمُذthen when رَأىhe saw حِبّيmy beloved إِلَيَّtoward me مُحسِناًbeing kind
أَساءَنيhe hurt me فِعلاًin deed وَساءَand was bad ظَنّاin judgment
Then, when he saw my beloved treating me kindly,
But since he saw my love for you doing good
He hurt me in deed and thought ill of me.
He did me wrong in deed and thought ill
ياO مَنyou who غَداbecame لِلنَيِّرَينِbeside the two luminaries ثالِثاًa third
وَثانِيَand a peer of الغُصنِthe bough إِذاwhen تَثَنّىit sways
O you who became a third beside the two luminaries,
O you who came between two intimate friends
And a peer of the bough when it sways,
And parted close companions twined as one
وَمَنand you who سَأَلناwe asked مِنهُfrom him مَنّاًa favor بِالمُنىwith wishes
فَمَنَّso he bestowed بِالوَصلِwith union لَناon us وَمَنّاand vaunted his favor
And you from whom we asked the boon we wished for,
When we asked you for affection’s sweetest boon
Who granted us union, then held the favor over us.
You obliged with union, and obliged again
أَشمَتَنيmade others gloat over me بِالصَدِّby rejection بَعدَafter شِدَّةٍhardship
وَمَنand whoever تَغَنّىsang فيin الهَوىlove تَهَنّاfound delight
You made others gloat over me by spurning me after hardship.
He rejoiced at estrangement after closeness
And whoever sang of love found delight.
Whoever exults in love will suffer pain
فَعُدso return بِوَصلٍwith union وَاِغتَنِمand win طيبَthe sweetness of الثَناpraise
فَإِنَّfor indeed ذاthis يَبقىendures وَذاكَand that يَفنىperishes
So restore our union and win sweet praise,
So return with affection, enjoy the sweetness
For this endures, while that passes away.
For this remains, while that will pass away
