لِيَهنِكَmay it gladden you أَنّيthat I فيin القِراعِcombat وَفيand in القِرىhospitality
لِيَهنِكَ أَنّي في القِراعِ وَفي القِرى
وَفيand in البَحثِscholarly debate حَظّيmy share الصَدرُthe front rank وَالصَدرُand the seat of honor وَالصَدرُand preeminence
وَفي البَحثِ حَظّي الصَدرُ وَالصَدرُ وَالصَدرُ
May it gladden you that, in combat and in hospitality,
To gladden me that I in the hamlets and in the plains,
And in debate, my share is the front rank, the seat of honor, and preeminence.
And in the search my breast and my breast and my breast,
وَيَومَand on the day of النَدىgenerosity وَالرَوعِand terror إِنif أَبِحِI allow اللِقاthe encounter
وَيَومَ النَدى وَالرَوعِ إِن أَبِحِ اللِقا
تَعجَّبَmarvels مِنّيat me البَحرُthe sea وَالبَحرُand the learned master وَالبَحرُand the swift steed
تَعجَّبَ مِنّي البَحرُ وَالبَحرُ وَالبَحرُ
And on the day of bounty and terror, if I grant an encounter,
And the day of dew and fright, if I solicit the meeting
The sea, the learned master, and the swift steed marvel at me.
The sea marveled at me and the sea and the sea
إِذاwhen عَنَّarises بَحثٌa question أَوor تَطاوَلَgrows formidable حادِثٌa calamity
إِذا عَنَّ بَحثٌ أَو تَطاوَلَ حادِثٌ
يُقَصِّرُfalls short عَنهُof it الحَبرُthe learned scholar وَالبَطَلُand the champion الذِمرُthe valiant
يُقَصِّرُ عَنهُ الحَبرُ وَالبَطَلُ الذِمرُ
When a question arises or a calamity looms,
When a sea of searching or an event became protracted
Beyond the powers of the scholar and the valiant champion,
The ink falls short and the warrior falls short of it
أُطاعِنُI cross lances with فُرسانُthe knights الكَلامِof speech وَتارَةًand at times
أُطاعِنُ فُرسانُ الكَلامِ وَتارَةً
أُطاعِنُI cross lances with خَيلاًcavalry مِنamong فَوارِسِهاits riders الدَهرُTime
أُطاعِنُ خَيلاً مِن فَوارِسِها الدَهرُ
I cross lances with the knights of speech, and at times
I contend with the horsemen of speech and sometimes
I cross lances with cavalry whose riders include Time.
I contend with armies whose warriors are time
