سَقىmay water اللَهُGod قَبراًa grave حَلَّcame to rest فيهِin it اِبنُson of مُقبِلٍMuqbil
تَوالِيَa succession of أَمطارٍrains بِهاamid them البَرقُthe lightning ضاحِكُsmiling
May God water the grave in which Ibn Muqbil lies
God watered a grave wherein lies Ibn Muqbil’s son
With successive rains, amid which the lightning smiles.
With continuous rains and flashing, laughing lightning
فَتىًa young man غابَvanished عَنّاfrom us شَخصُهُhis person دونَbut not ذِكرِهِhis memory
فَأَصبَحَand so he became فيناamong us حاضِراًpresent وَهوَand he is هالِكُdead
A young man whose person has vanished from us, but not his memory;
A young man left us, though his image stayed
So he is present among us, though he is dead.
So he was with us, while perished and decaying
غَريبٌa stranger عَنِaway from الأَوطانِthe homelands قَدindeed حَلَّsettled حُفرَةًa pit
مِنَof الحُزنِrugged ground يَعلوهُrises above him الصَفاsmooth rocks وَالدَكادِكُand low mounds
A stranger far from his homelands, he has settled in a pit
A stranger far from home, lying in a hole
In rugged ground, with smooth rocks and low mounds above him.
Sorrows ascending over purity and din
فَياso, O رَبُّLord قَدindeed وافاكَhas come to You ذاpossessing أَمَلٍhope فَجُدso give generously
عَليهِupon him بِرُضوانٍwith divine favor فَإِنَّكَfor indeed You are مالِكُSovereign
So, O Lord, he has come to You with hope; grant
Oh Lord, unto You came one with hope - so grace
Him Your favor, for You are Sovereign.
Him with Your pleasure, for Yours is the dominion
