رَعىmay care for اللَهُGod مَنhim who لَمdid not يَرعَhonor ليfor me حَقُّthe due of صُحبَةٍcompanionship
وَسَلَّمَand may He keep safe مَنhim who لَمdid not يَسخُgive generously ليto me بِسَلامِهِwith his greeting
May God care for him who did not honor friendship's due to me,
May God have mercy on those who failed to honor the rights of my companionship,
And keep him safe who did not freely offer me his greeting.
And may safety be upon those who did not bid me farewell.
وَفيand in ذِمَّةِthe protection of الرَحمَنِthe Most Merciful مَنhim who ذَمَّdisparaged صُحبَتيmy companionship
وَلَمand not أَكُI was يَوماًever ناقِضاًa breaker لِذِمامِهِof his covenant
And may he who disparaged my companionship be in the Most Merciful's protection,
Those who disparaged my companionship are under the protection of the Merciful,
Though I never once broke my covenant with him.
And I have never violated their pledge.
وَإِنّيand indeed I عَلىdespite صَبريmy patience عَلىwith فَرطِthe excess of هَجرِهِhis estrangement
وَقُربِand the nearness of مَغانيهِhis dwellings وَبُعدِand the remoteness of مَرامِهِattaining him
Yet, for all my patience with his excessive estrangement,
I endure his excessive estrangement with patience,
With his dwellings so near and himself so far beyond reach,
His denied affections and distant aspirations.
يُحاوِلُseeks طَرفيmy gaze لَحظَةًa glimpse مِنof خَيالِهِhis image
وَيَشتاقُand longs for سَمعيmy hearing لَفظَةًa word مِنof كَلامِهِhis speech
My gaze seeks a glimpse of his image,
My eyes seek a glimpse of him in my imagination,
And my ears long for a word of his speech.
And my ears long to hear his voice again.
وَيَومَand on the day وَقَفناwe stood لِلوَداعِfor farewell وَقَدand already بَداhe appeared
بِوَجهٍwith a face يُحاكيresembles البَدرَthe full moon عِندَat تَمامِهِits fullness
And on the day we stood to bid farewell, when he appeared
On the day we said farewell, his face shone like the full moon.
With a face resembling the moon at its fullness,
I complained of my sorrow, yet he smiled in response,
شَكَوتُI complained الَّذيof what أَلقىI suffer فَظَلَّand he kept مُقابِلاًmeeting
بُكايَmy weeping وَشَكوىand lament for حالَتيmy plight بِاِبتِسامِهِwith his smile
I complained of what I suffer—while he kept meeting
With tears that mimicked his words in their scattering,
My weeping and lament for my plight with his smile—
And reproach that mimicked his lips in their composure.
بِدَمعٍwith tears يُحاكيresembles لَفظَهُhis speech فيin اِنتِثارِهِits scattering
وَعَتبٍand reproach يُحاكيresembles ثَغرَهُhis teeth فيin اِنتِظامِهِtheir ordered arrangement
With tears like his words in their scattering,
So my lamentations disturbed nothing but his cheeks,
And reproaches like his teeth in their ordered array.
And my whispers stirred nothing but his poise.
فَماso not رَقَّgrew tender مِنfrom شَكوايَmy complaint غَيرُexcept خُدودِهِhis cheeks
وَلاand not لانَgrew pliant مِنfrom نَجوايَmy whispers غَيرُexcept قَوامِهِhis figure
Yet nothing softened at my complaint but his cheeks,
And nothing grew pliant at my whispers but his figure.
