عَذابُtorment الهَوىlove لِلعاشِقينَfor lovers أَليمُpainful
وَأَجرُهُمُand their reward يَومَon the day of المَعادِthe Resurrection عَظيمُgreat
Love’s torment is painful for lovers,
The agony of passion is painful for lovers,
And their reward on the Day of Resurrection is great.
And their reward on the Day of Judgment will be great.
فَوَاللَهِso, by God لاnot ذاقواthey tasted الجَحيمَHell وَإِنand even if جَنَواthey have sinned
فَحَسبُهُمُfor it suffices them أَنَّthat الغَرامَconsuming passion جَحيمُhell
So, by God, they shall not taste Hell, even if they have sinned;
By Allah, they will not taste hellfire even if they commit sin,
For consuming passion is hell enough for them.
For their torment of love itself is hell.
بِروحِيَmy soul as ransom مَنthe one who قَدindeed نامَslept عَنheedless of سوءِthe wretchedness of حالَتيmy condition
وَعِندِيَand I have مِنهُfrom him مُقعِدٌwhat makes me sit وَمُقيمُand what makes me rise
My soul be ransom for him who has slept, heedless of my wretched state,
By my soul, he who has slept ignoring my miserable state,
And from him I have what makes me sit and rise.
To me he is settled down and residing.
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat مُخطَفَthe slender part of خَصرِهِhis waist
لَراجيهِfor one who hopes for him كَهفٌa refuge وَالعِذارُand the cheek down مُقيمُabiding
And that is only because his slender waist
And that is only because his slender waist
Is a refuge for one who hopes for him, and his cheek down abides.
Is like a cave for me to take refuge, and excuse to reside.
