قَدindeed قيلَit has been said طولُlength البُعدِseparation يُسليconsoles الفَتىthe young man
قَد قيلَ طولُ البُعدِ يُسلي الفَتى
فَقُلتُso I said بَلrather يُفرِطُgoes to excess فيin وَجدِهِhis longing
فَقُلتُ بَل يُفرِطُ في وَجدِهِ
It has been said that long separation consoles the young man;
It has been said that distance relieves the pain of love
So I said: 'Rather, he grows excessive in his longing.'
But I say it only makes passion overflow
وَليسَand is not ذاpossessed of حَقٍّtruth وَلَكِنَّهُbut it
وَليسَ ذا حَقٍّ وَلَكِنَّهُ
تَوَقُّفُdependence الشَيءِthe thing عَلىon ضِدِهِits opposite
تَوَقُّفُ الشَيءِ عَلى ضِدِهِ
And it holds no truth, but it is
That is not true, for in reality
A thing's dependence on its opposite.
All things are known by their opposite
