إِنَّindeed المُلوكَthe kings لَتَعفوthey surely pardon عِندَwhen قُدرَتِهاtheir power
لَكِنَّهاbut they عَنfor ثَلاثِthree things عَفوُهاtheir pardon قَبُحاis shameful
Indeed, kings do pardon when they have power,
Though kings when able may forgive
but their pardon for three things is shameful:
Three things make pardon vile:
ذِكرُmentioning الحَريمِthe household's women وَكَشفُand revealing السِرِّthe secret مِنby ثِقَةٍa trusted person
وَالقَدحُand disparaging فيagainst المُلكِroyal authority مِمَّنby whoever جَدَّwas serious أَوor مَزَحاjoked
mentioning the household's women, and a confidant's disclosure of a secret,
To speak of sacred chambers, or reveal
and disparaging royal authority, whether in earnest or in jest.
Secrets, or mock the throne - in jest or bile.
وَالعَبدُand the servant لَمdid not يُفشِdivulge أَسرارَthe secrets المَليكِthe king وَلَمand did not
يَذكُرmention حَريماًhousehold women وَلاnor فيagainst مُلكِهِhis rule قَدَحاdisparaged
And the servant has not divulged the king's secrets, nor
No slave reveals his master's confidence,
mentioned household women, nor disparaged his rule.
Nor speaks of private rooms, nor throws the slightest glance
وَإِنَّماand only قالَhe said قَولاًa statement كانَwas غايَتَهُits aim
أَنto صَرَّحَhe stated plainly العُذرَthe excuse أَوor لِلحالِabout the circumstances قَدindeed شَرَحاhe explained
And he merely made a statement whose aim was
Against his kingdom. If he speaks at all
to state his excuse plainly or explain the circumstances.
It is to make excuse, explain some circumstance.
فَكَيفَhow, then يَسعىintercedes وَسيطُan intermediary السوءِevil عَنهِon his behalf بِماwith what
يُقصيهِdrives him away عَنكُمfrom you فَيُعطيso he gives فَوقَbeyond ماwhat اِقتَرَحاhe requested
How, then, can a malicious intermediary plead for him with what
Why then does this vile mediator try
drives him away from you, thus giving more than he requested?
To turn you from me, offering more than I could hope to buy?
