إِذاif بُليis afflicted اللَبيبُthe discerning man بِقُربِwith proximity to فَدمٍa dullard
تَجَرَّعَhe gulps down مِنهُfrom him كاساتِcups الحُتوفِdeaths
If a discerning man is afflicted with a dullard's company,
When a wise man is distressed by being close to the shedding of blood
he gulps down cups of death from him.
He drinks deep drafts from the cups of misfortunes
فَذوfor one possessing الطَبعِthe nature الكَثيفِcoarse بِغَيرِwithout قَصدٍintent
يُضِرُّcauses harm بِصاحِبِto one possessing الطَبعِthe nature اللَطيفِdelicate
For one of coarse nature, without intent,
So one of rugged temperament unintentionally harms
harms one of delicate nature.
One whose temperament is gentle
وَذاكَand that لِأَنَّbecause بَينَهُماbetween the two of them اِختِلافاًa difference
يُنافيopposes العَقلَreason بِالجَهلِwith ignorance العَنيفِfierce
And that is because between them lies a difference
And that is because between them there is a contradiction
that pits reason against fierce ignorance.
That opposes reason with violent ignorance
فَداءُfor the disease الجَهلِignorance لَيسَis not لَهُfor it دَواءٌa cure
كَحُمّىlike fever الرَبعِrecurrence every fourth day فيin فَصلِthe season of الخَريفِautumn
For the disease of ignorance has no cure,
For the disease of ignorance has no cure
like quartan fever in autumn.
Like a raging fever in the autumn season
