أَضحى تُراثُ اِبنِ لَيلى وَهوَ مُتَسمٌ

أَضحى تُراثُ اِبنِ لَيلى وَهوَ مُتَسمٌ

في أَقرَبيهِ بِلا مَنٍّ وَلا ثَمَنِ

في أَقرَبيهِ بِلا مَنٍّ وَلا ثَمَنِ

Ibn Layla's inheritance now lies marked out

The heritage of Layla's son has become worthless though he was generous

among his closest kin, without favor or payment.

Among his relatives without obligation or price

وَرَّثتَهُم فَتَفَرَّوا عَنكَ إِذ وَرِثوا

وَرَّثتَهُم فَتَفَرَّوا عَنكَ إِذ وَرِثوا

وَما وَرَثتُكَ غَيرَ الهَمِّ وَالحَزَنِ

وَما وَرَثتُكَ غَيرَ الهَمِّ وَالحَزَنِ

You made them heirs, so they scattered from you when they inherited;

You made them heirs, so they shunned you when they inherited

and I inherited nothing from you but worry and sorrow.

I have inherited from you nothing but sorrow and grief
