شَكَرتُI thanked إِلَهيmy God إِذwhen بَلىHe afflicted مَنthe one whom أُحِبُّهُI love him
بِعِشقِwith love for مَليحٍa beautiful one فيin الهَوىlove لَيسَdoes not يُنصِفُdeal fairly
I thanked my God when He afflicted the one I love
I thanked my God when the one I love
With love for a beautiful one who deals unfairly in love.
Was afflicted with a beautiful love – in passion there is no fairness.
يُجَرِّعُهُmakes him drink أَضعافَmany times ماwhat بيis within me مِنَof الأَذىsuffering
وَيُنحِلُهُand makes him waste away بِالهَجرِthrough separation مِنهُfrom him وَيُتلِفُand destroys
He makes him drink suffering many times greater than mine,
It makes him drink multiples of the pain I have,
And makes him waste away through separation from him, and destroys him.
And melts him with estrangement though he is the one who estranges.
فَأَورَدَهُso he led him ماwhat أَورَدَhe had led الناسَpeople فيin الهَوىlove
وَأَسلَفَهُand lent him الوَجدَlove's anguish الَّذيwhich كانَhe used to يُسلِفُlend
Thus he was led where he had led others in love,
So it brought him what it brought people in love,
And was lent the anguish he once used to lend.
And made him owe the passion that he used to make others owe.
فَأَصبَحَso he became مَسلوباًrobbed وَإِنand although كانَhe had been سالِباًa robber
فَفيso in الحُزنِsorrow يَعقوبٌJacob وَفيand in الحُسنِbeauty يوسُفُJoseph
So he became the one robbed, though he had been the robber:
So he became dispossessed though he was the dispossessor -
Thus, in sorrow he is Jacob, and in beauty, Joseph.
Thus Jacob in grief and Joseph in beauty.
