أَرى فُحشَ الكَلامِ يَروعُ قَلبي
وَلَيسَand not تَروعُهُfrightens it البيضُthe gleaming swords الحِدادُsharp
وَلَيسَ تَروعُهُ البيضُ الحِدادُ
I see that foul speech frightens my heart,
I see foul words startle my heart
Yet sharp, gleaming swords do not frighten it.
Yet mourning's white does not make it smart
كَحَلقِlike the throat of البَكرِthe young camel يَجرَحُهُwounds it زُلالٌclear, fresh water
كَحَلقِ البَكرِ يَجرَحُهُ زُلالٌ
وَلاand not يُدميmakes bleed مَشافِرَهُits lips القَتادُthe thornbush
وَلا يُدمي مَشافِرَهُ القَتادُ
Like a young camel's throat, which clear water wounds,
Like a young camel's throat cut by sleet
Though the thornbush does not make its lips bleed.
Not bloodied by the butchers' feet
