أَقولُI say لِراوُوقٍto a wine-strainer تَضَمَّنَcontained راحَناour wine
أَقولُ لِراوُوقٍ تَضَمَّنَ راحَنا
بِقَلبِكَin your heart إِكسيرُthe elixir السُرورِof joy فَلِمso why تَبكيdo you weep
بِقَلبِكَ إِكسيرُ السُرورِ فَلِم تَبكي
I say to a wine-strainer holding our wine:
I say to one whose laughter contained our joy
“In your heart is the elixir of joy—why, then, do you weep?”
With your heart the elixir of happiness, why do you cry?
فَقالَso it said هَمَتstreamed with tears عَينيmy eye وَسِنّيand my tooth ضاحِكٌlaughing
فَقالَ هَمَت عَيني وَسِنّي ضاحِكٌ
وَقَدand may تَدمَعُshed tears العَينانِboth eyes مِنfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of الضَحِكِlaughter
وَقَد تَدمَعُ العَينانِ مِن شِدَّةِ الضَحِكِ
It said, “My eye streamed with tears while my tooth was laughing;
He said, my eyes wept while my teeth laughed
And both eyes may shed tears from the intensity of laughter.”
For eyes may shed tears from excessive laughter
