أَيتُهُapparently: I saw him كَالهِلالِlike the crescent يَبدوhe appears
وَوَجهُهُand his face مُشرِقٌradiant بِلالاBilal
I saw him appear like the crescent,
I see him like the crescent moon
And his face was radiant—Bilal.
His face shining bright
مُخالِفٌcontrary مُخلِفٌpromise-breaking لِوَعديto my promise
ماnot قالَhe said يَوماًever نَعَمyes بِلالاwithout a 'no'
Contrary, he breaks his promise to me;
Breaking his promise to me
He never once said 'yes' without a 'no.'
Never once saying "yes" to me
ماnot بَلَّhe quenched يَوماًever غَليلَburning thirst قَلبيmy heart
وَإِنand though دَعاهُcalled him الوَرىpeople بِلالاBilal
He never quenched my heart's burning thirst,
Never once soothing my heart's torment
Though people called him Bilal.
Though all the people call him "yes"
دَعَوتُهُI called him سَيِّديmy master وَيَوماًand one day
فيin الدَهرِall time لَمdid not يَدعُنيleave me (contextual reading) بِلالاwithout a 'no'
I called him 'my master'; and not a single day
I called him "my master" one day
In all time did he leave me without a 'no.'
Yet in this life he never called me
