شَكَوتُI complained إِلىto الحَبيبِthe beloved أَنينَgroaning قَلبيmy heart
إِذاwhen جَنَّfell الظَلامُthe darkness فَقالَso he said إِنّاgroan!
I complained to the beloved of my heart’s groaning
I complained to my beloved of the sighs of my heart
When darkness fell; he said, “Groan!”
When darkness falls, and he said: "We certainly..."
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him أَظُنُّكَI think you are غَيرَnot راضٍpleased
بِماwith what كابَدتُI endured فيكَfor you فَقالَso he said إِنّاyes
So I said to him, “I think you are displeased
So I said to him: "I think you're not pleased
With what I have endured for you”; he said, “Yes.”
With what I have endured for your sake." And he said: "We certainly..."
فَقُلتُso I said أَتَرتَضيare you content? إِنif ناءَis weighed down قَلبيmy heart
بِأَثقالِby the burdens of الغَرامِpassionate love فَقالَso he said إِنif ناit is weighed down
So I said, “Are you content if my heart is weighed down
So I said: "Would you be content if my heart
By passion’s burdens?” He said, “If it is.”
Bore the burdens of passion?" And he said: "We certainly..."
فَقُلتُso I said فَإِنَّكُمthen indeed you لَوُلاةُsurely rulers of أَمرٍaffairs
عَلىover أَهلِthe people of الغَرامِpassionate love فَقالَso he said إِنّاindeed we are
So I said, “Then you are surely in command
So I said: "Yet you are the masters of affairs
Over the people of love”; he said, “Indeed we are.”
Over the people of passion." And he said: "We certainly..."
