رَضيتُI was content بِبُعديwith my distance عَنfrom جَنابِكَyour presence عِندَماwhen
رَأَيتُكَI saw you مَطوِيَّfolded الضُلوعِthe ribs عَلىaround بُغضيhatred of me
I accepted my distance from your presence when
I was content with my distance from you when
I saw you, your ribs folded around hatred of me.
I saw you bent over with hatred for me.
وَأَغضَيتُand I lowered my gaze لَمّاwhen أَنthat رَأَيتُكَI saw you كُلَّماwhenever
تَعَرَّضَarose عَتبٌreproach لاnot تَغُضُّyou lower your gaze وَلاand not يُغضيit lowers its gaze
And I lowered my gaze when I saw that, whenever
And I turned a blind eye whenever I saw you, whenever
reproach arose, you would not lower yours, nor would it.
Reproach was exposed that does not diminish nor diminish.
وَأَطلَقتُand I let loose دَمعيmy tears فيupon الخُدودِthe cheeks تَأَسُّفاًin sorrow
عَليكَover you فَطَلَّقتُso I divorced الجُفونَthe eyelids مِنَfrom الغُمضِsleep
And I let my tears flow upon my cheeks in sorrow
And I let my tears flow down my cheeks in sorrow
over you, so I divorced my eyelids from sleep.
For you, so I divorced the eyelids from blinking.
وَأَقنَعتُand I persuaded نَفسيmyself أَنthat أَراكَI see you عَلىdespite النَوىseparation
بِقَلبيwith my heart وَبَعضُand some الشَرِّevil أَهوَنُless grievous مِنthan بَعضِothers
And I persuaded myself to see you despite separation
And I convinced myself to see you in my determination
with my heart; some evils are less grievous than others.
With my heart, and some evil is lighter than some.
