كَ وَإِنّي مِن شيعَةِ الأَنصارِ
How have you deemed my blood lawful, O Ali, for
How could you, O Ali, shed my blood,
your sake, though I am among the followers of the Ansar?
While I am of the Ansars' sect?
وَتَلاand followed مَرحَباًMarhab فُؤاديmy heart لِلُقياto meet
وَتَلا مَرحَباً فُؤادي لِلُقيا

كَ فَنابَت عَيناكَ عَن ذي الفِقارِ
And my heart followed Marhab to meet
Yet my heart cried greetings, yearning to meet you,
you; then your eyes took the place of Dhu al-Fiqar.
Though your eyes turned from Thul-Fiqar.

I see no reason for that except
I see no reason for this, except
that in love you have become Dhu al-Khimar, the veiled one.
That you have donned love's veil.

So I knew for certain, when you deserted the courtyard of my
And so I knew, when you shunned our abode,
house, that there I am the martyr of the house.
That I by it am a martyr's prey.
