How can I stray when the dawn of your face shines,
How can one go astray with your radiant face as the morning dawn,
and your fragrance is musk wafting through all existence?
And your fragrance permeating the universe like sweet musk?
ياO مَنyou who إِذاwhen سَفَرَتare unveiled مَحاسِنُthe beauties of وَجهِهِhis face

O you, when the beauties of your face are unveiled,
O you whose beauty, when unveiled, keeps all eyes fixed in awe,
all creation's eyes remain fixed upon you.
You made clear my love for you in unambiguous passion, like water flowing clearly in its stream.
أَوضَحتَyou made clear عُذريmy excuse فيin هَواكَlove for you بِواضِحٍwith a radiant face

You made plain my excuse for loving you with a radiant face,
So even the censurers, when seeing your beauty, say to me,
on whose skin the dew of modesty shimmers.
“How astounding that your heart does not burst asunder!”
فَإِذاand when العَذولُthe reprover رَأىsaw جَمالَكyour beauty قالَsaid ليto me

When the reprover sees your beauty, he says to me:
You have enriched me with thoughts of you, making me needless of others -
How astonishing your heart—how does it not tear apart?
O my captivator! I am the wealthy flatterer.
أَغَنَيتَنيyou freed me from need بِالفِكرِthrough thinking فيكَof you عَنِfor الكَرىsleep

ياO آسِريmy captor فَأَناso I am الغَنِيُّthe rich one المُملِقُthe destitute one
Thinking of you has freed me from the need for sleep,
O you who captures the lover's heart - his tears flow
O my captor: I am rich, yet destitute.
And sleep is totally parted from him.
ياO آسِراًcaptor of قَلبَthe heart of المُحِبِّthe lover فَدَمعُهُso his tears

O captor of the lover's heart, his tears
If not for you, I would not have pretended affection with my friends,
are released, and sleep is divorced from him.
And wasted my life's duration on you.
لَولاكَbut for you ماnot نافَقتُI dissembled with أَهْلَthe people of مَوَدَّتيmy affection

But for you, I would not have dissembled with my friends,
I socialized with people who are not my peers,
and I have kept spending my precious life on you.
So I was like an anomalous line randomly appended to a document.
وَصَحِبتُand I kept company with قَوماًa people لَستُI am not مِنamong نَظَرائِهِمtheir peers

I have kept company with people who are not my peers,
Say to him who bears arms while his waist is thinner and more delicate than his hanging sword:
as though I were a line appended to a manuscript.
Do not burden your body with weapons and their heaviness - I fear for you from exhaustion.

Say, you two, to him who bears arms, whose waist
He is a gazelle with flames blazing on his cheeks,
is finer and more graceful than his slender spear's shaft:
For which the palm trunks sway and are ravaged.
لاdo not توهِweaken جِسمَكَyour body بِالسِلاحِwith weapons وَثِقلِهِand their weight

Do not weaken your body with weapons and their weight;
You meet him adorned with necklaces and armored,
I fear for you even from a gauze-thin tunic.
And you see him gilded and embellished.

A gazelle among the Turks, upon whose cheeks
The Turkish maidens left no beauty to others after their own,
is fire before which Moses falls, struck senseless.
Everything else created pales to their brilliance.

You meet him clad in mail and armor,
Whether they come down or go up, they are shining full moons.
and see him wearing earrings and a short tunic.

The Turks, beyond their own beauty, have left
Lions with terrifying glances.
no beauty for any other creature yet to be created.
Their cheeks are created from the blood of hearts,

If challenged in combat, they are lions of fierce mettle;
And their armors are forged from the blood of warriors.
if courted, they are shining full moons.
They pulled the bowstring to the ear with stern eyebrows,

A people who, when they ride their steeds, seem to you
From under which the arrows of glances are unleashed.
lions gazing with the eyes of wild-ox calves.
They spread their hair, so that each braid of them

Is a twist on which the plaits cascade.
and their armor is anointed with the blood of champions.

His glances nearly speak with magic.

Though his eyes belie his unhappiness.
is supple, bearing a banner of flowing locks.

Showed pleasure but was inwardly enraged and upset.
has glances that almost speak enchantment.
He arrived displaying coyness on his face,

While inwardly his heart held burning fire.
his narrow eye restrains him at the greeting.
In the evening he would share wine with me, and between us

I have not forgotten the night he visited me, while his watcher
Was a subtle reproach more delicious and refined than the wine.

He arrived, and modesty had brought forth upon his face
While his robe's end was clinging to my elbow.
a dew whose fire burns within my heart.
I embraced him and held him close, as if he was

That evening he passed me wine, and between us
Wrapped and knotted around my arm.
lay reproaches sweeter and clearer than the wine.
Until the dawn broke through, alarming him -

Until, when sleep began to play with his eyelids,
For dawn is the hated blue enemy of lovers.
my forearm and elbow became his pillow.
Thereupon he gestured farewell, kissing my hands
عانَقتُهُI embraced him وَضَمَمتُهُand clasped him فَكَأَنَّهُso it was as though he

While they clung to his robe's end.
were collared and girdled by my forearms.

Until the break of dawn appeared and startled him;
I yearn to kiss your mouth instead.
truly, morning is the blue-eyed enemy.
Though I accepted the dawn, even as it became

Then he signaled farewell, kissing
For lovers a croaking raven separating them.
my hands as they clung to his hem.
And I forgave the sin of time when your magnificent rising sun appeared,

O King triumphant and protected!
I long still more to kiss your mouth.

Yet I have made peace with morning, though it has become
Of a people who won pride with their efforts,
a croaking raven of separation for lovers.
And the orbit of glory was built for them.

And I forgave Time's sin when there appeared within it,
A people who, when they wrought havoc, were the frowning universe,
from the sultan's countenance, a shining sun.
And when they were generous, they were pouring clouds.

The sovereign al-Mansur, the king before whom
When the desperate sought help, they rushed forth,
calamities lower their gaze in fear.
And when the terrified sought refuge, they showed kindness.

A King encircled by Kings as if he is
a full moon whose rising-place is the horizon of glory.
A full moon encircled by the blossoms of stars.

From a clan who won honor through their striving,
A prophet of an era, sent with generosity -
and for whom Artuq built the sphere of glory.
All people believe the message he brought.

A people who are scowling Time when they strike,
Good fortune's cloud has shaded him, moving on,
but when they give, they are rain-rich clouds.
While his clear sign is unconditional generosity.

When a supplicant cries for aid, they hasten;
The lofty dome, and the bird around which
when a seeker seeks refuge, they show kindness.
The banners of victory flutter.

A prophet of his age, sent forth with generosity;
So for its wilderness are its armies and steeds,
all mankind believes in what he has brought.
And for its birds are its falcons and hawks.

A King too majestic for vision - so we perceive him
drifting onward; his sign is unbounded generosity.
With our hearts, not with sight.

When contemplative, you say "a silent brooding one."

Like the sea, but does not perish.

His fingers are deft with the reed pen, and they
Until when the competing opponent slows, he comes to it
are defter still with bright swords on the day of battle.
Steadily walking, taking his time.
كَفٌّa hand لِماof what حَفِظَpreserved اليَراعُthe reed pen مُضيعَةٌsquandering

A hand that squanders what the reed pen has preserved,
O you who brings honor to the seats of his crown,
and scatters what sword blades gather.
And through them brings pride to the Furthest Mosque,
لاnot يَحتَويhe holds الأَموالَwealth إِلّاexcept مِثلَماjust as

يَحويone holds بِأَطرافِwith the tips of البَنانِthe fingers الزَيبَقُquicksilver
He holds money no more firmly than
Iraq and its people were gratified at your arrival,
one holds quicksilver with one's fingertips.
While Harrat Raqim and Jawsaq were lonesome without you.
جَرَتِraced المُلوكُthe kings لِسَبقِto reach first غاياتِthe goals of العُلىhigh glory
فَمُشَمَّرٌso one girded up فيin جَريِهِhis running وَمُحَلَّقُand another soaring
Kings raced to reach the goals of high glory,
The eyes of Sour became radiant images,
some girded up for running, others soaring.
And Hima thirsts in anticipation of your approach.
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen نَكَصَretreated المُكافِحُthe contender جاءَهاhe reached them
مُتَهادِياًwalking serenely فيin خَطوِهِhis steps يَتَرَفَّقُtaking his time
Until, when the contender retreated, he reached those goals,
A land adorned by its meadows - our clothes are of silk,
walking serenely, unhurried in his steps.
And our beds are of unwoven silk fabric.
يامَنO you who بِهِthrough him شَرُفَتwere ennobled مَعاقِدُthe fastenings of تاجِهِhis crown

O you whose crown's fastenings gain honor through you,
So people beseech the clouds while one in this land
while they bestow honor on the heads of others:
Calls upon God that it will not drown.
أَنِسَتrejoiced بِمَقدَمِكَin your arrival العِراقُIraq وَأَهلُهاand its people

Iraq and its people have rejoiced in your arrival,
O you who compares the giants to peas,
while Harzam and al-Jawsaq are lonely for you.
Far is the comparison - and where is the pea to the giants?
وَغَدَتand became عُيونُthe springs of الصورِal-Sur صوراًsidelong-eyed وَالحِمىand the sanctuary

The springs of al-Sur cast sidelong glances, and the sanctuary
The star Suhail is not mentioned in competing for the heights,
has come to yearn for your arrival.
Except it hangs its head in embarrassment to the full moon.
أَرضٌa land تَحِلُّyou alight بِرَبعِهاin its dwelling-place فَلِباسُناso our clothing

A land in whose dwelling-place you alight: our clothing
How often giants leapt to other giants,
is fine silk, and our bedding is brocade.
Seeking the impossible - for none can attain what is beyond reach!
فَالناسُwhile people تَستَسقيask rain from الغَمامَthe clouds وَمَنand whoever بِهاis in it

While people beg clouds for rain, whoever lives there
They did not regain their senses until the snakes of Qanat
prays to God that he may not drown.
Became walls for them, and the blood of horsemen became trenches.
ياO مَنyou who يُقايِسُcompare مارِدينَMardin بِجُلَّقٍwith Jilliq
بَعُدَis far-fetched القِياسُthe comparison وَأَينَand where مِنهُbeside it جِلَّقُis Jilliq
O you who compare Mardin with Jilliq,
They gathered until you extended a hand to them -
the comparison is far-fetched—where is Jilliq beside it?
They recalled with it the hands of Saba, so they dispersed.
لَمnot تُذكَرِis mentioned الشَهباءُal-Shahba فيin سَبقِthe race for العُلىhigh glory
إِلّاexcept كَبَتstumbled شَقراؤُهاits chestnut mare وَالأَبلَقُand the piebald steed
Al-Shahba is never mentioned in the race for glory
The frenzy addled their minds, so they imagined
without its chestnut mare and the piebald steed stumbling.
An unfurling banner in every stirring leaf.
كَمhow many مارِدينَrebels لِمارِدينَagainst Mardin تَواثَبواhave sprung
وَمِنَand among المَحالِimpossibilities طِلابُis seeking ماwhat لاnot يُلحَقُcan be reached
How many rebels have sprung against Mardin!
You are but one on the day of peace,
Yet seeking what cannot be reached is impossible.
Singular and unique - but on the day of woe, a brave warrior.
لَمnot يَعقِلواthey understood إِلّاuntil وَآجامُand the thickets of القَناspears

سورٌa wall لَهاfor it وَدَمُand the blood of الفَوارِسِhorsemen خَندَقُa moat
They came to their senses only when thickets of spears
You have shut the door of excuse, along with its distortion,
stood as its wall, and horsemen's blood as its moat.
While your generosity, its door is never closed.
وَتَجَمَّعواand they gathered حَتّىuntil مَدَدتَyou stretched out لَهُمto them يَداًa hand

They massed together until you stretched out a hand to them;
My Master, hear from your loyalist a praise
by it they recalled the hands of Saba, and scattered.
Speaking truly of my devotion for your eminence,
ذَهَلَbewildered الهِياجُthe clash عُقولَهُمtheir minds فَتَوَهَّمواso they imagined
فيin كُلِّevery خافِقَةٍfluttering thing لِواءٌa banner يَخفُقُwaving
The clash bewildered their minds, so they imagined
I am a lifelong loving servant of your favors,
a waving banner in every fluttering thing.
And none speaks like me falsely in flattery.
ماnot أَنتَyou are يَومَon the day of السَلمِpeace إِلّاexcept واحِدٌone
فَرَدٌalone وَفيand on يَومِthe day of الكَريهَةِbattle فَيلَقُan army
In peace you are but one,
A servant residing in Iraq whose praises
one alone; on the day of battle, an army.
Sometimes exotify, sometimes orientalize you.
أَغلَقتَyou closed بابَthe door of العُذرِexcuse مَعalong with تَصحيفِهِits redotted form: treachery
وَالجودُand generosity عِندَكَwith you بابُهُits door لاnot يُغلَقُis closed
You have shut the door to excuse—and treachery, its redotted twin;
So the elders of Bakr envied my speech -
but with you generosity's door is never shut.
Its complexities exhausted their juniors.
مَولايَmy lord سَمعاًgive ear مِنfrom وَلِيَّكَyour loyal follower مَدحَةًa praise poem
عَنof صِدقِthe sincerity of وُدّيmy affection فيconcerning عُلاكُمyour glory تَنطِقُspeaks
My lord, give ear to a praise poem from your loyal follower,
Sometimes even the eloquent orator is overwhelmed,
speaking of my sincere affection for your glory.
And the unskilled fumbles in confusion.
أَناI am عَبدُthe servant of أَنعُمِكَyour favors القَديمُlongstanding وِدادُهُhis affection
وَسِوايَand others besides me فيin أَقوالِهِtheir words يَتَمَلَّقُflatter
I am the servant of your favors, with longstanding devotion;
They came accusing me of esoteric language,
others merely flatter in their words.
For I delved into the obscure, while they orientalized.
عَبدٌa servant مُقيمٌdwelling بِالعِراقِin Iraq وَمَدحُهُand his praise
فيكُمof you يُغَرِّبُgoes westward تارَةًat one time وَيُشَرِّقُand goes eastward
A servant dwelling in Iraq, whose praise
Theirs is an essential eastern nature,
of you travels now west, now east.
While ours is Iraq, and eloquence its habit.
فَلَقَدfor indeed وَقَفتُI dedicated عَلىto عُلاكَyour glory بَدائِعاًmarvels
يَعياis baffled بِأَيسَرِهاby the least of them النَصيحُthe sincere speaker المُفلِقُthe masterful one
For I have dedicated marvels to your glory,
I did not consider poetry itself a merit,
the least of which baffles the sincere, masterful speaker.
But I saw virtue in how you spend it.
مِنof كُلِّevery هَيفاءِslender-waisted beauty of الكَلامِspeech رَشيقَةٍgraceful
فيin طَيِّهاits folds مَعنىًa meaning أَدَقُّfiner وَأَرشَقُand more graceful
Each a slender-waisted, graceful beauty of speech,
They said you were endowed to praise him,
with a meaning yet finer and more graceful folded within.
And I replied, surely the blessed is endowed.
حَسَدَتenvied أُهَيلُthe petty folk of دِيارِthe lands of بَكرٍBakr مَنطِقيmy expression
فيهاin them كَماjust as حَسَدَenvied الهَزارَthe nightingale اللَقلَقُthe stork
The petty folk of Diyar Bakr envied my expression
Acceptance satisfies me as approval,
in them, as the stork envied the nightingale.
For donating affection is generosity.
أَعيَتbaffled أَكابِرَهُمtheir greatest men أَصاغِرُthe smallest parts of لَفظِهاtheir wording

وَلَرُبَّماand many a time أَعياbaffled الرِخاخَthe rooks البَيدَقُthe pawn
My verses' smallest words baffled their greatest men;
Ever shall your affairs hold fast to fortune -
many a time a pawn has confounded the rooks.
In the land you forbid some and provide to others.
جاؤوكَthey came to you بِاللَفظِwith wording المُعادِrepeated لِأَنَّنيbecause I
غَرَّبتُwent westward فيin طَلَبِpursuit of الغَريبِthe rare وَشَرَّقواand they went eastward
They came to you with repeated wording, because I
went west seeking rarities, while they went east.
لَهُمُthey have بِذاكَin that جِبِلَّةٌa temperament جَبَلِيَّةٌmountain-bred

They have, in this, a mountain-bred temperament,
while we have Iraq, where eloquence is deep-rooted.
ماnot كُنتُI was أَرضىcontent بِالقَريضِwith poetry فَضيلَةًas a distinction
لَكِنbut رَأَيتُI saw الفَضلَmerit عِندَكَwith you يَنفُقُfinds favor
I was not content to count poetry a distinction,
but I saw that merit finds favor with you.
قالواthey said خُلِقتَyou were created مُوَفَّقاًgranted success لِمَديحِهِin praising him
فَأَجَبتُهُمso I answered them إِنَّindeed السَعيدَthe fortunate مُوَفَّقُis granted success
They said: You were created to succeed in praising him;
so I answered them: Indeed, the fortunate are granted success.
إِنّيindeed I لَيُقنِعُنيam surely satisfied by القَبولُacceptance إِجازَةًas a reward
إِنَّindeed التَصَدُّقَgiving in charity بِالوِدادِof affection تَصَدُّقُis charity
Acceptance alone satisfies me as a reward;
indeed, giving affection is an act of charity.
لازالَmay ever remain أَمرُكَyour command بِالسَعادَةِwith good fortune نافِذاًprevailing
فيthroughout الأَرضِthe earth تَمنَعُyou withhold from مَنwhomever تَشاءُyou wish وَتَرزُقُand you provide sustenance
May your command ever prevail with good fortune
throughout the earth, withholding from whom you will and granting sustenance.
