He went around, a cup of wine in his palm,
Heavy of hip, light of sash.

نَحنُwe بِهاthrough them المَرضىthe sick وَهُنَّand they الصِحاحthe healthy
He turns his eyes among his lovers;
We are sick through them, while they are sound.

ظَنَنتُI thought عَنهُfrom him المِسكَmusk وَالنِدَّand incense فاحwafted
Clad in a short tunic and girdled, when he speaks,
I think musk and incense waft from him.
يُسكِرُناhe intoxicates us مِنfrom نُطقِthe speech of أَلحاظِهِhis glances
وَأَلسُنُand the tongues الأَعيُنِof the eyes خُرسٌmute فِصاحeloquent
He intoxicates us with the speech of his glances,
And the tongues of eyes are mute yet eloquent.

بَدرُthe full moon الدُجىof night يَحمِلُcarries شَمسَthe sun الصَباحof morning
It is as though he, with the cup in his palm,
Were night's full moon bearing the morning sun.
قَدindeed أَشرَقَhe shone وَأَبرَقَand he flashed وَأَحرَقَand he burned
قَلبيmy heart بِنارِwith the fire of الوَجدِpassion وَالاِلتِياحand burning thirst
He has shone, flashed, and burned
My heart with the fire of passion and thirst.

حَتّىuntil غَداhe became يُدعىis called أَميرَprince of المِلاحthe beautiful
Beauty's qualities reached perfection in his face,
Until he came to be called the prince of beauties.

فَأَورَثَso it bequeathed الأَحداقَthe eyes مِنهُfrom it اِتِّقاحshamelessness
Dark-lipped, he has a cheek that rain has watered,
So the eyes inherit shamelessness from it.
فَحَلَّقَso he soared تَأَلَّقَhe glittered فَطَلَّقَthen he divorced
نَوميmy sleep وَراجَعتُand I took back البُكاweeping وَالنُواحand lamentation
So he soared, glittered, and divorced
My sleep; and I took back weeping and lamentation.

وَهوَand he مِنَwith الأَلحاظِglances شاكِbristling with السِلاحweapons
Slender-waisted, you would think him unarmed,
Yet he is fully armed with glances.

Turk-like in his gaze, he has a figure
More delicate in its swaying than the shafts of spears,
وَأَرشَقَand more graceful وَأَمشَقَand more slender فَماso how أَعشَقَenamored
قَلبيmy heart لَهُfor him فيin جِدِّهِhis earnestness وَالمُزاحand jest
And more graceful and slender—how enamored
My heart is of him, in his earnestness and jest!
