تَيَقَّنَhe became certain مُذsince أَعرَضتُI turned away أَنّيthat I لَهُtoward him ساليindifferent
فَأوهَمَso he led to believe ضِدّيmy rival أَنَّهُthat he الهاجِرُthe forsaker القاليthe hater
He knew for certain, since I turned away, that I no longer cared for him;
Since I turned away, I was certain that I am done with him
so he led my rival to think he was the one who forsook and hated me.
So my opponent deluded himself that he is the one who left
وَأَظهَرَand he made it appear لِلأَعداءِto the enemies إِذwhen صَدَّhe turned away جافِياًcoldly
بِأَنَّthat جَفاهُhis estrangement عَنfrom دَلالٍcoquetry وَإِذلالِand humiliation
And when he turned away coldly, he made it appear to my enemies
And he showed the enemies, when he acted aloof
that his estrangement sprang from coquetry and a wish to humiliate me.
That his aloofness was neither kindness nor humility
فَلَمّاthen when رَآنيhe saw me لاnot أُحَرِّكُI move بِاِسمِهِwith his name
لِسانيmy tongue وَلَمand did not أَشغَلI occupy بِتَذكارِهِwith remembrance of him باليmy mind
Then, when he saw I did not let his name stir
So when he saw me not mentioning his name
my tongue, nor occupy my mind with remembrance of him,
Nor occupying my mind with remembering him
وَأَيقَنَand he became certain أَنّيthat I لاnot أَعودُI return لَوَصلِهِto union with him
وَلَوand even if قَطَّعَتcut apart بيضُgleaming الصَوارِمِthe keen-edged swords أَوصاليmy limbs
and knew for certain that I would not return to union with him,
And knew that I will not go back to his friendship
even if gleaming, sharp swords cut my limbs apart,
Even if the blades of swords severed my limbs
تَعَرَّضَhe made overtures لِلأَعداءِto the enemies يَحسُبُhe supposes أَنَّهُمthat they
يَكونونَthey would be فيin حِفظِpreserving المَوَدَّةِaffection أَمثاليmy equals
he made overtures to my enemies, supposing they
He turned to the enemies, thinking
would be my equals in preserving affection.
They will keep loving him like I did
فَأَصبَحَso he became لَمّاwhen جَرَّبَhe tried الغَيرَothers نادِماًregretful
كَثيفَcoarse in حَواشيthe fringes of العَيشِlife مُنخَفِضَlow in الحالِcondition
So, when he had tried others, he became regretful,
So he woke up regretful, when he tried others
with life's fringes coarse and his condition brought low.
With scarce livelihood and lowered status
إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle رَآهُhe saw him عاشِقٌa lover قالَhe said شامِتاًgloating
اِنعَمbe happy صَباحاًin the morning أَيُّهاO you الطَلَلُthe ruined dwelling الباليtimeworn
Whenever a lover saw him, he would say, gloating:
Whenever a lover sees him, he says gloating
Ah, a happy morning to you, O timeworn ruin!
What a fine morning O fallen one in ruins
فَإِنّيfor I إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle اِختَلَّproved wanting خِلٌّa close friend تَرَكتُهُI leave him
وَبِتُّand I spend the night وَقَلبيand my heart مِنof مَحَبَّتِهِlove for him خالِfree
For whenever a close friend proves wanting, I leave him,
As for me, when a friend turns disloyal, I leave him
and spend the night with my heart free of love for him.
And stay with a heart devoid of love for him
وَماand not أَناI مِمَّنamong those who يَبذُلُsacrifices العِرضَhonor فيin الهَوىpassion
وَإِنand even if جُدتُI give generously لِلمَحبوبِto the beloved بِالروحِwith the soul وَالمالِand wealth
And I am not one who sacrifices his honor for passion,
And I am not one who gives up dignity in love
even if I give the beloved my soul and wealth.
Even if I yearn for the beloved with my soul and money
عَلىwith the proviso أَنَّنيthat I لاnot أَجعَلُI make الذُلَّabasement سُلَّماًa ladder
بِهِby it تَرتَقيascends نَفسيmy soul إِلىto نَيلِattaining آماليmy hopes
Yet I do not make abasement a ladder
Moreover, I do not make humiliation a ladder
by which my soul ascends to attain my hopes.
With which my soul climbs to achieve my hopes
وَماand not زِلتُI ceased فيin عِشقيmy love عَزيزاًdignified مُكَرَّماًhonored
أَجُرُّI drag عَلىover العُشّاقِthe lovers بِالتيهِin haughtiness أَذياليmy hems
And I have always been dignified and honored in my love,
And I have always been precious and honored in my love
trailing my hems over lovers in haughty pride.
Dragging the train of my gown over lovers
فَقَولاso you two say لِمَنto whoever أَمسىhas become بِهِregarding him مُتَغالِياًovervaluing
وَلَمand did not يَدرِknow أَنّيthat I مُرخِصٌmaking cheap ذَلِكَthat الغاليthe precious one
So you two tell whoever has come to prize him too highly,
So say to whoever dealt with me arrogantly
not knowing that I make that precious one cheap.
And did not know that I can easily dispense with one so dear
كَذاthus لَمnot أَزَلI cease يَرعىhonor المُحِبّونَthe lovers فَضليmy excellence
وَيَلبَسُand wear أَهلُthe people of الحُبِّlove فيin العِشقِpassion أَسماليmy rags
Thus lovers have always honored my excellence,
That the lovers continue to appreciate my merit
and the people of love wear my rags in passion.
And the people of love wear my garments in passion
