Greet the companions, and make the rounds with a cup of wine.

And embroider the robe of joys with a cup.

Wine has become a companion to their souls.

Spare the wine, and pass me a draught cooled by the north wind,

It has remained my ruin, yet is the essence of my well-being.

Red—if the cupbearers left it unmixed,

It would serve us at evening in place of a lamp.

The bubbles veiled its radiance, as though it were

Twilight aflame beneath the hem of dawn.

Bubbles keep the cups looking like

    A maiden's waist girdled with a sash.

Time has ruled, and averted its gaze from us.

O friend, do not be content with being sober.

Youth's due is a debt you owe, so pay it

By drinking amid leafy groves and full-figured women.

The east wind's breath with their spreading fragrance.

Robes that shine when the clouds weep,

With cheeks of roses or mouths of daisies.

The rain greeted them with their fragrance, and

Their boughs swayed, without wine's intoxication.

They became laden, and their flowers shone, as though

The fire-striker's hand had struck their wrists.

Joy wove leafy groves in their sky,

Within which the stars of goblets swoop down.

We gained joy there, and spent the night beholding

The daughter of vines, without a marriage contract.

Time adorned our necks with its bounty

And was lavish, clothing us in garments of mirth.

Until we plundered life, until it seemed

Ibn Artuq's wealth in panegyrists' hands.

Protector of the guest when he alights at his abode,

Reviver of humankind through his ever-pouring bounty.

The world grew beautiful through him; its face had been

Bare of adornment and silver ornaments.

A judgment I accepted; his generosity was extended

By my need, and his bounty greeted me with success.

His noble deeds untied the fetter of my poverty

When he feathered my wing after obscurity.

I have battled my fate since I lodged at his abode,

And made him my weapon in times of distress.

Enough for me, when I seek glory among humankind,

Are my morning visits to his shelter and my evening visits.

Najm al-Din, you have laden the necks of humankind

With weighty favors of bounty and generosity.

You gave your enemies' hopes command over wealth,

And made glory's drinking no morning draught.

He gained the heights, then went by night with his resolve's keen blade.

It spares you the need for a Khatt spear and broad swords.

Prudence with which you unlocked affairs; indeed, they

Are like a lock in need of a key.

The sons of journeying made pilgrimage to you, knowing

For certain that you are the Kaaba of panegyrists.

The outcomes of their efforts are joined with success.

They praised you as fully as they could, and inscribed

For your eminence, gratitude that none can erase.
