عاقَنيhindered me الغَيثُthe rain عَنfrom زِيارَةِvisiting غَيثٍa rain of bounty (a benefactor)
بِشرُهُhis smiling welcome البَرقُthe lightning وَالعَطاءُand the giving السُيولُthe torrents
The rain kept me from visiting a rain of bounty,
whose smile is lightning and whose giving is torrents.
غارَgrew jealous مِنof كَفِّهِhis hand وَمِنand of نُطقِthe speech فيهِhis mouth
بِصَنيعٍover a kindness يُسدىis bestowed لَناon us فَيُزيلُand so it removes
It grew jealous of his hand and the speech of his mouth
over a kindness bestowed on us, which it then takes away.
قَطَعَsevered الوَصلَcontact ثُمَّthen واصَلَcontinued هَطلاًpouring down
فَبِرُغميso, to my dismay ذاكَthat one القَطوعُthe severer of ties الوَصولُthe joiner of ties
It severed contact, then kept pouring down;
so, to my dismay, that rain both severs and connects.
فَهوَthus it فيin فِعلِهِits action وَفِيٌّfaithful خَؤونٌtreacherous
Thus, in its deeds, it is faithful, treacherous,
just, unjust, generous, miserly.
فَلِذاso for this reason جاءَit came وَهوَwhile it was طَلقٌcheerful عَبوسٌfrowning
مَنظَرٌa sight رائِقٌpleasing وَدَمعٌand tears هَطولُpouring
So it came cheerful yet frowning:
a pleasing sight, with tears pouring down.
فَتَحَيَّرتُso I was bewildered بَينَbetween مَدحٍpraise وَذَمٍand blame
لَستُI do not أَدريknow فيin حَقِّهِits regard ماwhat أَقولُI say
So I was torn between praise and blame;
I do not know what to say of it,
غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I لَهُtoward it شَكُوٌّever-complaining شَكورٌever-grateful
except that I am ever complaining of it, ever grateful,
reproachful, excusing, silent, outspoken.
