عَرَضنا أَنفُساً عَزَّت لَدينا

عَرَضنا أَنفُساً عَزَّت لَدينا

عَليكُم فَاِستَخَفَّ بِها الهَوانُ

We offered souls we held dear

to you, and humiliation made light of them.

وَلَو أَنّا دَفَعناها لُعَزَّت

وَلَو أَنّا دَفَعناها لُعَزَّت

وَلَكِن كُلُّ مَجلوبٍ مُهانُ

وَلَكِن كُلُّ مَجلوبٍ مُهانُ

And had we held them back, they would have been esteemed;

but all that is brought is held in contempt.
