Is it dawn's turquoise, or twilight's ruby,

that appeared, rousing the gray dove among the leaves?

Or the East's keen blade, when it shone stained,

like a sword appearing red with clotted blood?

The boughs swayed as the breeze passed through them,

drunken, like a drowsy man roused from sleeplessness.

The cloud's mantle has been spread across the sky,

a curtain whose edges stretch along the horizon.

The clouds weep, while the land's mouth smiles,

and the birds coo from pride and desire.

The birds are in delight, the clouds in strife,

the water in flight, and the bough in restlessness.

Earth's cheek is fully adorned with blossoms,

continually thanking the rain-laden cloud's downpour.

Dew crowned the boughs' leaves at midmorning,

as a maiden's cheek is crowned with sweat.

The birds there released their cooing speech,

in strains both varied and harmonious.

Shade steals its steps among the great trees,

while the waters creep without concealment.

The roses appeared, their smiling mouths spread wide,

and the tender narcissus there stares wide-eyed.

In radiant red or verdant green,

or brilliant yellow, or purest white.

From the flowers' fragrance there wafted, far and wide,

a perfume that scented everyone who breathed it in.

As though mention of God's Messenger had passed among them,

and they gained fragrance from his aromatic scent.

Muhammad, the Chosen, the Guide, in whom

humankind sought refuge, and he guided them along the clearest paths.

And he for whom God took covenants from

all the prophets, from the earliest to those who followed.

And he who ascended through the seven heavens to a station

that no ascent had ever reached before.

And he who drew near, then closer, toward his Creator,

within two bow-lengths, or nearer to the neck.

And he of whom the praisers' praise falls short

in helplessness, and the master of fluent speech falls mute.

Thought fails concerning him, if one seeks for him

a description; his appearance exceeds what eyes can grasp.

Lofty virtues for which God Most High praised him,

saying, "In all things you possess noble character."

O last of the messengers in being sent, yet first among them

in merit, their winner of precedence and the prize!

You gathered every precious virtue of theirs,

all that they shared, and all that was distinct.

Your mention came in the authoritative Torah and the

Gospel and the earliest scriptures, in due order.

God singled you out for the distinction to which

"By your life" bears witness in the Criterion in many ways.

Creation swears sincerely by God's name,

while the Lord of the Throne swore by yours to affirm the truth.

Your benefactions encompassed all existence, while

humankind was singled out for generosity pouring from you.

A generosity by which you guaranteed the servants' livelihoods,

taking among them the place of a rain-laden cloud.

Had your bounty belonged to the Flood at the surging of

its waves, Noah would not have escaped drowning.

Had Adam been in a secluded chamber reserved for you,

he would have been protected from the evil of accursed Iblis.

Had your resolve been in the Friend's fire, when

it touched him, he would not have escaped it unburned.

Had your might been in Moses, God's interlocutor, when

he was addressed, he would not have fallen thunderstruck that day on the Mount.

Had Tubbaʿ, in the lands' drought, called

on God by your name and sought life-giving rain, he would have received it.

Had all people believed in you sincerely,

no loss or oppression would be feared at the Resurrection.

Had a servant obeyed God, then come

bearing hatred for you, he would be impious before God.

Had the warriors of the jinn defied you in rebellion,

you would have driven them through the earth, layer after layer.

Were you to endow bright swords with a resolve by which they shine,

hard helmets and shields would offer no protection against them.

Were you to make the dust on the day of battle continuous

with night, dawn's bright brow would not dispel it.

You subdued the regions of God's earth, opening

every closed place within them with bright swords and dusky spears.

    وَالدينُ في نَشَزٍ وَالكُفرُ في نَفَقِ

    So war is in delight, and idolatry seeks refuge;

religion stands on high, and unbelief hides in a tunnel.

A merit that adorns this world, becoming for it

a crown upon the head, or a necklace around the neck.

May the God of the Throne bless you as long as there rises

    the daytime sun, and the stars of dusk appear;

and your radiant family, through whom were known

    the paths of right guidance, thus becoming the communities' guide;

and your noble, lordly companions who raced

toward virtues, some following and others racing ahead.

    A people—whenever a man's soul harbors a trace

of hatred for them, he becomes wretched after bliss.

What will you say if we seek to praise you, when

you have already honored us with praise of your own, agreed upon?

If you said, "In poetry is wisdom, and eloquence holds

enchantment," you encouraged every fearful soul toward it.

    فَلَو أَرَدنا جَزاءَ البَعضِ لَم نُطِقِ

    Thus you were first to offer praise and favors;

even if we sought to repay a part, we could not.

So I shall make no excuse to neglect your praise,

as long as my mind is neither blocked nor hindered.

    فَالخَلقُ تَفنى وَهَذا إِن فَنيتُ بَقي

    I shall offer you my purest praise, striving hard;

creation perishes, but this, if I perish, will remain.
