قَطَعتُ مِنَ الهِباتِ رَجاءَ نَفسي

وَقَلَّ إِلى العَنا دَلَجي وَسيري

I have lost hope of favors for my soul,

And my determination to withstand adversity has diminished.

فَقُل لِمُكَلَّفي تَسآلَ قَومٍ

لِيُدرِكَ مِنهُمُ نَفعاً بِضَيري

Say to the one insisting on asking people,

In order to get some benefit from my distress:

أَتَبذُلُ دونَ وَجهِكَ ماءَ وَجهي

وَتَمحو بِاِسمِ شَرَّكَ ذِكرَ خَيري

Do you offer my face-water for other than Your face,

And erase with the name of Your evil the mention of my goodness?!

أَنِفتُ مِنَ السُؤالِ لِنَفعِ نَفسي

فَكَيفَ أُطيقُ أَفعَلُهُ لِغَيري

I am too proud to ask for benefits for myself,

So how can I bear to do that for others?!
