أَمُشَبِّهَO you who liken الطَرفِthe eye الكَحيلِkohl-dark بِنَرجِسٍto a narcissus
أَمُشَبِّهَ الطَرفِ الكَحيلِ بِنَرجِسٍ
بَعدَfar-fetched is القِياسِthe comparison وَذاكَand that مِنamong أَضدادِهِits opposites
بَعدَ القِياسِ وَذاكَ مِن أَضدادِهِ
O you who liken the kohl-dark eye to a narcissus,
the comparison is far-fetched, for that is its opposite.
نافاهُit differs from it فيin تَدويرِهِits roundness وَصَفارِهِand its yellowness
نافاهُ في تَدويرِهِ وَصَفارِهِ
وَجُحوظِand the bulging of مُقلَتِهِits eyeball وَفَرطِand the excess of سُهادِهِits sleeplessness
وَجُحوظِ مُقلَتِهِ وَفَرطِ سُهادِهِ
It differs from the eye in its roundness and yellow hue,
and its bulging eyeball and excessive sleeplessness.
فَاِعجَبso marvel لِزَهرِat the blossom of الباقِلاءِthe broad bean وَقَدand indeed بَداit has appeared
فَاِعجَب لِزَهرِ الباقِلاءِ وَقَد بَدا
فَوقَabove القَضيبِthe stem يَميسُit sways gracefully فيin أَبرادِهِits robes
فَوقَ القَضيبِ يَميسُ في أَبرادِهِ
So marvel at the broad-bean blossom as it appears
above the stem, swaying gracefully in its robes.
يَحكيit resembles عُيونَthe eyes of العينِthe wide-eyed beauties فيin تَلويزِهِits almond shape
يَحكي عُيونَ العينِ في تَلويزِهِ
وَفُتورِهِand its languor وَبَياضِهِand its whiteness وَسَوادِهِand its blackness
وَفُتورِهِ وَبَياضِهِ وَسَوادِهِ
It resembles the eyes of wide-eyed beauties in its almond shape,
and its languor, its whiteness and its blackness.
