    فَلَقَد أَخَذتَ عَلى العِهادِ عُهودا

    Do not fear lifelessness, O dwelling of the beloved;

for you have taken pledges from the recurring rains.

And your soil will surely be worn away, even without rainfall,

by the downpour of tears, should you ask for more.

How often in your courtyard, on our parting day,

did clouds of tears leave a frequented watering-place!

And how often I poured my abundant tears upon you

on that long day, full of longing.

And I once knew gazelles passing auspiciously through you,

in the shade of your ravine, and lovely, lissome women:

dark-eyed beauties—when courted, they were oryx calves,

and when they wished to kill, they were lions.

They shamed chrysanthemum blossoms with smiles

so radiant, and rivaled anemones with their cheeks.

They envied the sand-dunes and the boughs there,

so their hips grew heavy and their figures swayed.

Each was a radiant beauty: when she approached,

you beheld pearls neatly arrayed within her mouth.

She feared the eyes of lovers, so she fashioned

the crescent's mansion into amulets and necklaces.

How often I kept vigil through the night, awaiting a visit

from her, yet saw no shaft of dawn.

I watched its stars, imparting to al-Suha

my sickness, while it gave my eyelid sleeplessness.

I bore love's burdens and its weight

    alone, and battled Time single-handed.

So I made Najm al-Din my arrow when

    I beheld calamities' rebellious demon.

A star to whom the stars owe humble allegiance,

a king before whom kings fall prostrate.

A rain-cloud that shows you lightning from swords,

and earthquakes and thunder from steeds.

Vigilant, he cast into the meshes of his resolve

traps with which he hunts proud armored warriors.

Insight that sees what lies beneath the earth's layers,

and eminence aspiring to ascend to heaven.

He promised the keen swords to cleave necks with them,

a promise I deem a threat to his foes.

He did not double the emphatic nun, for

when he speaks, his deed outstrips confirmation.

O king who has mastered all mankind,

so that all men became bondsmen to his reign!

You arrived when generosity and its people had died,

so you restored it as a new creation in your presence.

You came toward Diyar Bakr, manifesting

justice that thoroughly set its land in order.

She lay unadorned; had that not been a jewel

belonging to God, He would not have adorned her neck with you.

In how many a raging raid, when you were present,

were you granted victory and confirmation!

In its fire you were al-Khalil; and indeed,

when handling its iron, you were Dawud.

You hid the earth's face beneath the enemies' corpses,

until you made wild beasts your visiting delegations.

You wedded the enemies' virgins to their own souls,

    and made the spearpoints witnesses.

They disbelieved, so you granted their heads safety, for

they fell before your sword, bowing and prostrating.

They transgressed, so you charged Death with warring against them,

then chose the swords as his soldiers.

The whole wilderness grew too narrow for the slain,

so you made the vultures' livers burial-vaults.

Blood flowed freely down over the horses,

as though they were clothed in skins of blood.

Alas for a people who angered you in their ignorance,

and thought your imminent conquest far away!

They fortified themselves in a citadel, not knowing

that you would witness its appointed day,

until you assailed her fortresses with battalions

gleaming white, and led long-necked steeds against her,

with lionlike warriors, few in number in battle—

and it is bravery to be few in number—

young men who broke their swords' scabbards

and took the crowns of heads as scabbards instead.

They cast armor off their bodies and spread

over their bodies the iron of their hearts.

They passed her, eyes narrowed; she sensed

terror, and nearly swayed with her armored warriors.

Had their rain not reddened her cheek,

they would have made blood the rouge upon her cheek.

She cast those within her out to you, as though

you had taught her generosity from your two palms.

They spoke, having felt dread of your might

and fear that leaves the eloquent witless.

They begged to live, and modesty restrained you

from letting a petitioner to you be seen turned away.

Had you wished, your blades would have spared no youth

among them, nor would your spears have left an infant.

They cast down their weapons in fear when they saw

your army's banners filling the wilderness.

When clouds arose, they took them for swirling dust,

lightning for bright swords, and thunder for banners.

    لَكِن عَذابَ اللَهِ كانَ شَديدا

    They were drunk, but not from a cup of wine;

    rather, God's punishment was severe.

They saw you as a Mu'tasim of resolve, and feared

in you the renowned day of Ammuriyya.

When they submitted, you bestowed favors on them—

you cannot set a limit to even a portion of them.

Look, and you will find with every soul among them,

from your overflowing kindness, an escort and a witness.

You gave the horizon of kingship, O star of guidance,

a light that dispelled calamities' black darkness.

You drove the tyranny of misfortunes away from mankind,

and how many a fugitive from Time you sheltered!

As long as your generosity reaches me, O son of Artuq,

let whoever wishes grant me coldness and rejection.

Never has my praise of you undone my servitude's fetter

without your laying on more fetters of bounty.

May you ever be envied for attaining the heights,

for your glory endures so long as you are envied.
