مَنwhoever لَمdid not تَرَsee الحِلَّةَal-Hillah الفَيحاءَthe spacious مُقلَتُهُhis eye
مَن لَم تَرَ الحِلَّةَ الفَيحاءَ مُقلَتُهُ
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he فيat اِنقِضاءِthe ending of العُمرِlife مَغبونُcheated
فَإِنَّهُ في اِنقِضاءِ العُمرِ مَغبونُ
Whoever's eye has not seen spacious al-Hillah
Is surely cheated when his life comes to an end.
أَرضٌa land بِهاin it سائِرُall الأَهوالِterrors قَدindeed جُمِعَتhave been gathered
أَرضٌ بِها سائِرُ الأَهوالِ قَد جُمِعَت
كَماjust as تَجَمَّعَcame together فيهاin it الضَبُّthe spiny-tailed lizard وَالنونُand the fish
كَما تَجَمَّعَ فيها الضَبُّ وَالنونُ
A land where all terrors have been gathered,
Just as the lizard and the fish have come together there.
فَالغُدرُfor the pools طافِحَةٌoverflowing وَالريحُand the wind نافِحَةٌblowing
فَالغُدرُ طافِحَةٌ وَالريحُ نافِحَةٌ
وَالوُرقُand the gray doves صادِحَةٌsinging وَالطَلُّand the dew مَوضونُwoven
وَالوُرقُ صادِحَةٌ وَالطَلُّ مَوضونُ
For the pools brim over, and the wind blows,
And the gray doves sing, and the dew is woven.
ماnot شانَهاhas marred it غِيرُexcept بَغيِthe wrongdoing of الجاهِلينَthe ignorant بِهاin it
ما شانَها غِيرُ بَغيِ الجاهِلينَ بِها
كَأَنَّهاas though it were جَنَّةٌa paradise فيهاin it شَياطينُdevils
كَأَنَّها جَنَّةٌ فيها شَياطينُ
Nothing mars it but the wrongdoing of the ignorant within it,
As though it were a paradise with devils in it.
