وَلَمand did not أَنسَI forget إِذwhen زارَvisited الحَبيبُthe beloved بِرَوضَةٍin a garden
وَقَدand already غَفَلَتwere heedless عَنّاof us وُشاةٌslanderers وَلُوّامُand reproachers
Nor have I forgotten when the beloved visited in a garden,
while slanderers and reproachers were heedless of us.
وَقَدand already فَرَشَspread out الوَردُthe roses الخُدودَthe cheeks وَنُشَّرَتand were unfurled
لِمَقدَمِهِfor his arrival لِلسَوسَنِof the irises الغَضِّfresh أَعلامُbanners
The roses had spread their cheeks, and unfurled
for his arrival were the fresh irises’ banners.
أَقولُI say وَطَرفُand the eye النَرجِسِof the narcissus الغَضُّtender شاخِصٌstaring fixedly
إِلَيناat us وَلِلنَمّامِand for the tale-bearer حَولِيَaround me إِلمامُa drawing near
I say, while the narcissus’s tender eye stares
at us, and the tale-bearer hovers about me:
أَياO رَبُّLord حَتّىeven فيin الحَداقِقِthe gardens أَعيُنٍeyes
عَلَيناon us وَحَتّىand even فيamong الرَياحينِthe fragrant herbs نَمّامُa tale-bearer (also an aromatic herb)
O Lord, even in the gardens there are eyes
on us, and even among fragrant herbs a tale-bearer!
