وَنَصرانِيَّةٍand a Christian woman بِتناwe spent the night جِواراًas neighbors
لَهاto her فَلَناso we had بِساحَتِهاin her courtyard جُنوحُa longing
And a Christian woman—we spent the night as neighbors
To her, drawn toward her courtyard.
خَطَبناwe sought عِندَهاat her place راحاًwine فَجاءَتso she came
بِراحٍwith wine لِلنَفوسِfor souls بِهاwith it تُريحُshe brings relief
We sought wine from her, and she came
With wine with which she brought souls ease.
وَأَبدَتand she revealed مَنظَراًa sight حَسَناًbeautiful فَظَلناso we remained
وَكُلٌّand each مِنfrom تَلَهُّفِهِhis longing قَريحُwounded
And she revealed a lovely sight, so we were left
Each wounded by his longing.
فَلَمّاthen when أَنthat دَنَتshe drew near نَحوِtoward me بِكَأسٍwith a cup
يُضاعِفُdoubles نورَهاits radiance الوَجهُthe face الصَبيحُfair
Then, when she drew toward me with a cup,
Whose radiance her fair face doubled,
مَسَحتُI passed يَديmy hand عَلىover خَدٍّa cheek أَسيلٍsmooth
فَعادَتthen returned فِيَّwithin me بَعدَafter المَوتِdeath روحُa soul
I passed my hand over a smooth cheek,
And after death, my soul returned within me.
فَهَزَّتthen she swayed عِطفَهاher side مَرَحاًin delight وَقالَتand she said
قَضىhe met نَحباًdeath فَأَحياهُand revived him المَسيحُChrist
Then she swayed her waist in delight and said:
“He died, and Christ brought him back to life.”
