What ails the firmly rooted mountains, that they move?

Has the time come for mankind's resurrection and rising?

Or has the world passed away, so Yadhbul withers

because of it, and Thabir cries out for doom?

Or has news come that the son of Ayyub has died,

so that they almost heave with grief for him?

Al-Afdal, the king, whose glory has

a train trailing over Suha's crown.

He of the loftiest rank, and of the face

of which full moons grow jealous, then sink from sight.

He gives freely while the rain clouds hold back their drops

from us, and he is just while time is unjust.

When he gives, gold is humbled in his palm

through generosity, and today a peer for him is hard to find.

His generosity's tale is told with stern reproach,

so his tale is handed down among mankind.

He amassed praise and, except for

amassing gold, can do whatever he wishes.

From a people: no seeker of their bounty ever doubted

that praise is confined to them alone.

A people: when narrators fall silent about their merit,

pulpit and throne speak their praise.

Calamities have ravaged us through his loss,

and great is the loss of the great king.

Loud rose the news of his death; once, when he appeared,

cries of 'No god but God' and 'God is greatest' rose for him.

Grief for him engulfed all creatures, so their hearts

are dead with sorrow, and their bodies are graves.

Chaste of waistcloth, no lapse stains him

for which his gifts might be called atonement.

His hands stretched far toward goodness, but his stride

toward sins was short, and so was his tongue.

Pure water is purified by washing him,

and camphor is perfumed by his fragrance.

Where is he who earned praise through his striving

in a trade in glory that never fails?

Where is he who governed the lands with a mind

like the sea, whose clarity nothing could cloud?

Where is he who lavished blessings on all mankind?

Time is folded away, yet their memory remains unfurled.

O absent one, whose beauty the dust has hidden

from us, yet whose favors remain present with me!

And traveler who departed and prolonged his absence,

though we hold a traveler's duty to be shortening prayers.

Indeed, you stood upright as commanded, and your command is

exalted: you are both commander and commanded.

Through judgment you protected Hama and its people,

and your lauded efforts cared for the kingdoms.

Your wealth was always laid open to petitioners,

forever, while your honor among them stayed inviolate.

I never thought the clouds of your bounty would depart

from us, and its brimming sea run dry.

Even if your echo is silenced for me, I still have

from you both rust and thirst—ṣadaʾ and ṣadā.

Paradise's gardens heard of your arrival and adorned themselves,

and their youths and houris shared the glad news.

Scarcely had the washers turned their reins away from you

when Mubashshir and Bashir came to you.

The learned began to say, having wept,

knowing the delight of what you are going toward:

'You weep for him, yet he had scarcely found rest

in the grave before the houris clasped his hand.'
