أَتَهجُرُنيdo you forsake me وَماand not أَسلَفتُI previously committed ذَنباًan offense
وَيَظهَرُand there appears مِنكَfrom you زَورٌfalsehood وَازوِرارُand aversion
Do you forsake me, though I have committed no offense?
You spurn me though I've done no wrong,
And falsehood and aversion appear in you.
Falsehood and lies from you now throng,
وَتَعرِضُand you turn away كُلَّماwhenever أَبدَيتُI offer عُذراًan excuse
وَكَمand many an ذَنبٍoffense مَحاهُerased it الإِعتِذارُthe apology
And you turn away whenever I offer an excuse.
You shun all the excuses I prolong,
And many an offense has been erased by an apology.
Many a sin pardon did belong.
وَتَخطُبُand you seek بَعدَafter ذَلِكَthat صَفوَthe purity of وُدّيmy affection
فَهَلso would يُرضيكَplease you وُدٌّaffection مُستَعارُborrowed
And after that you seek the purity of my affection.
Yet you seek sincere affection in me,
So would borrowed affection please you?
Can feigned love ever pleasure thee?
فَلاso no وَاللَهِby God لاnot أَصفوI am sincere in affection لِخِلٍّto a friend
سَجِيَّتُهُhis nature التَعَتُّبُreproachfulness وَالنِفارُand aversion
So no, by God, I will not give sincere affection to a friend
Nay, by God! Untrue shall I never be,
Whose nature is reproach and aversion.
To a friend whose ways are glib and free.
إِذاif اِختَلَّbecomes estranged الخَليلُthe close friend لَغَيرِfor no ذَنبٍoffense
فَليthen mine is فيin عَودِthe resumption of صُحبَتِهِhis companionship الخِيارُthe choice
If a friend becomes estranged for no offense,
If a friend parts with no cause to blame,
Then the choice of resuming his companionship is mine.
The choice to reunite is mine to claim.
