أَتَقتَصُّdo you exact retribution? مِنّيfrom me إِنif جَنىcommitted الغَيرُanother زَلَّةًa fault
أَتَقتَصُّ مِنّي إِن جَنى الغَيرُ زَلَّةً
كَكاسِرِlike one who breaks دَنِّthe jar of الخَلِّvinegar إِنif جَنَتِoffended الخَمرُthe wine
كَكاسِرِ دَنِّ الخَلِّ إِن جَنَتِ الخَمرُ
Do you exact retribution from me if another commits a fault,
Do you demand from me if another errs,
like one who breaks the vinegar jar if the wine is at fault?
Like breaking a wine jug if the wine ferments,
وَمَنand among عَجَبِthe wonders of الأَشياءِthings أَنَّthat جَريمَةًa crime
وَمَن عَجَبِ الأَشياءِ أَنَّ جَريمَةً
يَجيءُcomes بِهاwith it زَيدٌZayd فَيُجزىand is punished بِهاfor it عَمرُوAmr
يَجيءُ بِها زَيدٌ فَيُجزى بِها عَمرُو
And one of the strangest things is that a crime
And of the wonders of things, that a crime
is committed by Zayd, yet Amr is punished for it.
Committed by Zayd is punished in 'Amr.
