لاdo not تَنطِقَنَّspeak (emphatic) عَنِout of الهَوىdesire
لا تَنطِقَنَّ عَنِ الهَوى
ياO مَنyou who يُعَنَّفُare reproached فيfor الهَوىlove
يا مَن يُعَنَّفُ في الهَوى
Do not speak out of desire,
Speak not of love,
O you who are reproached for love.
O you who are reproached for love,
بِسِوىwith anything other than الحُمَيّاstrong wine وَالمُحَيand the countenance (continued)
بِسِوى الحُمَيّا وَالمُحَي
ياcompletion of 'countenance' ماnot لِأَدوائيfor my ailments دَواa cure
يا ما لِأَدوائي دَوا
Apart from strong wine and the countenance,
Except with modesty and bashfulness.
there is no cure for my ailments.
O you who have no remedy for my malady,
قَسَماًI swear بِنَجمِby the star of الكَأسِthe cup فيin
قَسَماً بِنَجمِ الكَأسِ في
كَفِّpalm السُقاةِthe cupbearers إِذاwhen هَوىit falls
كَفِّ السُقاةِ إِذا هَوى
I swear by the star of the cup in
I swear by the star in the cup,
the cupbearers' palm, when it falls:
In the hand of the cupbearer when it sets,
ماnot ضَلَّstrayed صاحِبُكُمyour companion بِذاthrough that (continued)
ما ضَلَّ صاحِبُكُم بِذا
كَcompletion of 'that' عَنِfrom الصَوابِwhat is right وَماand not غَوىwent astray
كَ عَنِ الصَوابِ وَما غَوى
Your companion has not, through that, strayed
Your companion has not erred
from what is right, nor gone astray.
In this from right conduct, nor strayed.
ياO عاذِليmy reproacher فيمَنfor the one whom طَوَيfolded (verb stem)
يا عاذِلي فيمَن طَوَي
تُI (verb ending) عَليهِaround him قَلبيmy heart فَاِنطَوىand so it folded shut
تُ عَليهِ قَلبي فَاِنطَوى
O you who reproach me for the one I folded
O you who blame me for her
my heart around, and it folded shut—
Whom I enveloped in my heart, withdraw.
القَلبُthe heart عَنهُfrom him ماnot سَلاforgot; ceased loving
القَلبُ عَنهُ ما سَلا
وَإِلىand to مَقالِكَyour words ماnot اِرعَوىtook heed
وَإِلى مَقالِكَ ما اِرعَوى
the heart has not forgotten him,
My heart turned not from her,
nor has it heeded your words.
Nor to your words did it incline.
خالَفتَyou contradicted عَبدَAbd (servant) القادِرِal-Qadir (the All-Powerful) الal- (the; surname prefix)
خالَفتَ عَبدَ القادِرِ ال
قُرَشِيَّQurashi (of Quraysh) فَاِسأَلso ask ماwhat رَوىhe related
قُرَشِيَّ فَاِسأَل ما رَوى
You have contradicted Abd al-Qadir al-
You opposed Abul-Qasim al-Qurashi,
Qurashi; so ask what he related,
So ask what he related,
إِذfor; since ذاكَthat one يَخطوwalks فيin الهَواthe air (continued)
إِذ ذاكَ يَخطو في الهَوا
ءِcompletion of 'air' وَإِنand even if تَخَطّىhe oversteps فيin الهَوىlove
ءِ وَإِن تَخَطّى في الهَوى
for that one walks in the air,
When he stepped into love,
even if he oversteps in love.
Though in love he transgressed.
